Ward Melville softball

The Ward Melville Softball team paid tribute to local military personnel, past and present in a pre-game ceremony on April 19 that was organized by their booster club and hailed as Military Appreciation Day. Before their game against the West Islip Lady Lions, about 15 military members from all branches of service took part in a ‘Tribute Walk’ that deployed the girls on both sides of the left field foul line as every honoree was introduced. They marched toward home plate, as their name, rank, branch and citations were announced to the applauding crowd.

Instead of donning their traditional green and gold, the Ward Melville Softball team wore special American flag-themed uniforms for the occasion that made note of the originally scheduled date of April 12. Due to inclement weather, the event was moved up by a week. Ward Melville won the game by a score of 11-1, as Julianna Russ pitched a complete game, striking out nine. The National Anthem was beautifully performed by sophomore infielder Coryn Rizzo and her sister Samantha served as honorary batgirl for the Lady Pats, who have won 4 of their last 5 and improved to 5-4 on the season.

Both Connetquot (No. 5) and Ward Melville (No. 8) softball teams had their backs against the wall where both suffered an opening round playoff loss and wound up in the loser bracket Saturday morning, May 18.

Connetquot at (12-6) hosted Ward Melville (10-8) in an elimination round of the Suffolk AAA Class championship and led Patriots 6-0 through four innings of play. Izzy Parente’s bat spoke next when she plated Kaitlyn Morales in the top of the 6th inning to take the goose egg off the board. Makenna Steinberg stepped into the batters box and drove in two more, then teammate Cate Scolaro drove in Steinberg for Ward Melville to trail 6-4 to go into the bottom of the 6th inning.

Down to their final three outs, the Patriots trailed 7-4 in the top of 7th but loaded the bases with two outs when Parente crossed home plate on a passed ball to trail 7-5. It was too little too late as Connetquot concluded the Patriots 2024 season.

Ward Melville, having won their season opener with Central Islip, dropped to Half Hollow Hills then fell to Patchogue-Medford. The Patriots were anxious to get back to winning ways in a road game against Riverhead Friday afternoon, April 5.

After three scoreless innings it was Sara Kropp who provided the spark for the Patriots with a leadoff home run to center field in the top of the 4th inning to break the ice. The lead would be short lived as the Blue Waves answered back in the bottom of the inning to tie the game and mustered the go-ahead run to begin the 5th.

Ward Melville saw ample opportunity but stranded several runners on base to lose 2-1 in the League I matchup.

The loss drops the Patriots to 1-3 in the early going as Riverhead remains undefeated..
