This past Saturday, Sept. 7, the Port Jefferson Yacht Club and Village of Port Jefferson held their annual Village Cup Regatta to raise money and awareness for Mather’s Palliative Medicine Program and the Lustgarten Foundation for Pancreatic Cancer Research. Anyone interested was allowed to be a crew member on the sailboats, with no experience required.

The event included multiple activities throughout the day, with two main parts: a parade followed by a race. The parade ran from the outer harbor on the west across to the waterfront on the east. In the race, participants from the Village of Port Jefferson and Mather Hospital competed as part of the Village Cup Charity Fundraiser.

The parade allowed teams to circle the port on their boats, all of which were decorated with flags and banners, and wave to the large crowd of guests as a prelude to the race. Families gathered on the docks to view the parade, which was managed by Port Jefferson Yacht Club staff and accompanied by bagpiper Marty Sexton. The parade lasted about 45 minutes and helped the sailors adjust to sporadic wind patterns throughout the day.

Despite overcast weather and sudden rain, sailors and guests had a great time, creating memories of a lasting tradition likely to continue in years to come. Rain began shortly after the parade and continued lightly for a couple of hours. Fortunately, the showers did not interfere with the race, and sailors proceeded as planned.

Port Jefferson Yacht Club Village Cup Regatta Committee member Dianna Stackow managed the setup process for the post-race gathering. “We are here to set up for the party that happens after the race,” she said. “They have speeches, raffles, food, wine, beer; Ralph Macchio will be here, and some government representation.” The party began around 3:30 p.m., welcoming guests and participants as they finished the race and celebrated another year of the tradition. “This is our 15th year, and we are going to break $1 million [in donations]. We’re very proud because we’re such a small club, so it’s such a large thing for us to do. It’s just such a good feeling, all around, everyone, our little club, you know, close together, and it’s nice to see what we accomplish.”

After an exhilarating race, participants, families, and guests gathered at a party in the Port Jefferson Village Center to celebrate their efforts and the successful fundraising brought by this year’s regatta. Celebrity ambassador Ralph Macchio has supported the regatta — along with the two programs funded by it — for the last 10 years. He was present at the event this weekend, along with many returnees who have helped uphold this tradition for the past decade and a half.

The friendly competition ended with the Village of Port Jefferson team winning.

Mount Sinai School District Board of Education held its Aug. 21 meeting at which it considered its District-Wide School Safety Plan. The discussion covered the contents and purposes of this newly-revised draft for final approval before submitting it to the state. Also under consideration was the Student Records Policy, which covers the district’s legal responsibility of confidentiality.

The policy statement of the safety plan emphasizes the district’s refusal to tolerate violence or threats on school grounds, stating that it “will make every effort to prevent violent incidents from occurring.” In compliance with state Education Law Section 2801-a, the district Building-Level Emergency Response Plan will be remaining confidential in order to assure maximum safety for students and staff.

After using feedback from families to make the safety plan preferable, the members of the board had no objections toward continuing the process of implementing the plan at this meeting.

Numerous other topics regarding safety and wellness for Mount Sinai students and staff are addressed in this draft. The district has clear plans in place for the unlikely case of any type of emergency that could otherwise put members and students of the district at risk.

The district’s Student Records Policy promises privacy to students and their families. The first section of the policy clearly states the limits of who can access the records of a student. The board recognizes its legal responsibility to maintain the confidentiality of student records. 

The board also discussed budgets and plans for new implementations to enhance the school. They considered solar power plans, strategic planning updates and building a bright future for the district. 

Energy savings

An update regarding an energy performance contract with Energia — an engineering company that works with districts to help bring energy-saving initiatives to schools — was presented to the board. The company defined the term “performance contract” in its presentation. 

“It is a facility improvement project,” Energia’s senior project manager, Justin Benoit, said. “But the key difference or the key factor about energy performance contract projects is that these projects, on one hand, generate guaranteed energy savings. And through this process you are able to then leverage those guaranteed energy savings as a funding source for the upgrades themselves. So in that sense, it’s a little bit different than a traditional capital project. You are not going out to the taxpayers in order to raise money for those projects, you are able to take your existing utility budget, reduce that line item ultimately, and then use those energy savings to then in turn pay for the upgrades that you would have received.”

With school right around the corner, Mount Sinai School District has a promising year ahead — and it seems as though the additions and updates in regard to the district will benefit students, staff and families.

The Town of Smithtown Board meeting Aug. 13 included discussions on authorizations for construction of a freight yard on Old Northport Road. The majority of the meeting was dedicated to hearing from residents who voiced notable worries concerning the freight yard.

“Many of us here have the same concerns and are here to share our opinions,” said Diane Calderone, a Fort Salonga resident. “To me, there are so many reasons why I don’t think it’s a good idea, and I don’t understand the support for this.”

The Town of Smithtown has previously appeared to support the project. “My number one reason against the freight yard is health concerns. Many people have asthma and respiratory issues, among other ailments. The exhaust and pollution from this freight yard — from the freight trains and the trucks parked there to move materials and goods off the trains onto the trucks for distribution across the island — that’s going to generate a lot of pollution and exhaust. That’s not going to be good for anybody’s health, even if you don’t have asthma or any respiratory conditions today. Who knows what that will create in the future? I think that’s a huge risk this freight yard poses to the public,” she said.

Calderone expressed her desire for support from the board. “I’m here to speak about your support of the freight yard. I hope with us coming here, speaking out, taking time to show that this is important to us, you will reconsider and rescind your support. Instead, you should be helping us, leading us in opposing the freight yard. We can’t do it as individuals, although we are trying as hard as we can.” She closed her speech by cautioning the board that their support is crucial to stopping the project. “We really need you to help us oppose this freight yard.”

Another speaker, Anthony Haberman, expressed apprehension regarding the risk of accidents. “I ask everyone to put themselves in my shoes. I’m a father, a business owner in Commack and I have three small children,” Haberman said. He noted a statistic, stating that the nation faces an average of three derailment incidents daily, which raises concerns about the risk of an accident occurring at this freight yard.

Many of the speakers at the meeting felt the board should reconsider its position on the project.

Primary concerns included pollution, air quality, health risks, increased traffic and the potential for accidents involving both the trains and vehicles traveling to and from the site. The board did not discuss its position in detail after hearing from the speakers. 

The next board meeting is on Sept. 3 at 2 p.m.
