The Ward Melville varsity boys’ cross country (XC) team has had an exceptionally productive start to the 2024 season — a testament to the hard work the athletes put in over the summer. In just the first three weeks of competition, the team has demonstrated their potential as one of the top contenders in the state.

On September 14, the team’s top eight runners traveled to upstate Queensbury to compete in the prestigious Pre-State meet, a 5k (3.1 miles) race. This early-season event attracts the best teams in New York — all vying for a spot at the NYS Championship in November. In a field of 24 teams and 195 athletes, Ward Melville’s runners claimed first place overall in their race.

Senior Jon Seyfert led the charge, finishing 1st overall with an impressive time of 15:50. Junior Anthony Anatol — in his first-ever 5K race — followed as the second Ward Melville athlete, placing 8th overall in 16:19. Sophomore Andy Senf and Junior Luke Jantzen, both competing in just their second and first 5k races respectively, crossed the finish line nearly in unison with times of 16:44.3 and 16:44.4 — placing 23rd and 24th. Sophomore Matteo Ritieni rounded out the top five for Ward Melville, finishing 35th with a time of 16:52 securing a team score of 87 points. This performance beat out second-place finisher Corning — a two-time state champion in the last four years — by an impressive 38 points.

Also competing for Ward Melville were Junior Tim Brown and Sophomores Matt Fumai and Leo Puckett. Brown finished 53rd with a time of 17:23, Fumai placed 62nd at 17:31 and Puckett — in his first 5k — clocked in at 18:10 for 89th place.

When all varsity race results were merged to compare every team that competed that day, Ward Melville once again came out on top — finishing 1st out of 117 teams and defeating the reigning state champions Saratoga Springs by 11 points.

The Ward Melville boys’ XC team is young but highly motivated — fully embracing the program laid out by Coaches DeLuca and Liebowitz. Their dedication to teamwork and relentless work ethic has created a positive competitive environment that is paying dividends. According to the coaches, this season is shaping up to be one of the best in the history of Ward Melville cross country.

In recognition of their stellar performance, the Ward Melville boys’ cross country team is now ranked #1 among all Class A (large schools) teams and #2 overall in New York State.

Stony Brook women’s soccer earned its fourth consecutive clean sheet and victory, topping Charleston 3-0 to begin CAA play on Sept. 22 at LaValle Stadium.

The Seawolves improved to 6-2-1 with their fourth straight victory. Stony Brook has outscored the opposition 13-0 during its winning streak, which began back on September 9. Stony Brook continued its dominance at LaValle Stadium, improving to 4-0 at home this season.

Stony Brook took a 1-0 lead when Gabby Daniels scored her second goal of the season in the 30th minute, assisted by Emanuelly Ferreira on a set piece from the far corner. The Seawolves dominated much of the possession in the early going, making good on the constant pressure by scoring the opening goal of the match.

The Seawolves quickly added to their lead when Ferreira and Leah Rifas combined on a goal. Rifas’ throw-in led Ferreira perfectly, who patiently waited to sneak one past Charleston’s keeper to tally the first goal of her collegiate career.

Stony Brook padded the lead early in the second half on Linn Beck’s strike in the 50th minute. Luciana Setteducate and Gabrielle Cote assisted on the goal.

Charleston upped its tempo and pressure offensively late in the contest, finishing with a 9-6 advantage in second-half shots. Despite the nine shots and five corners in the second half, Nicolette Pasquarella was up to the task. Pasquarella made four of her five total saves over the final 45 minutes of play to earn her sixth win of the season and lead Stony Brook to its fourth straight clean sheet victory.

“I’m very happy, it was a great performance by the team. I truly believe that Charleston is one of the best offensive teams in the CAA, obviously that stats say that too. I thought we did a good job trying to minimize their good chances,” head coach Tobias Bischof noted postgame. “But more importantly we did what we wanted to do, which was create chances and score some goals.”

The team returns to the road to continue conference play at Elon on Sept. 26. The Seawolves and the Phoenix meet at 7 p.m. with the contest streaming live on FloFC.

Stony Brook football never trailed en route to its third straight victory, taking down Campbell, 24-17, in the 2024 CAA opener on Sept. 21 in North Carolina.

The Seawolves used a huge, 227-yard showing on the ground, including 179 yards from Roland Dempster to go along with three rushing touchdowns. The Seawolves improved to 3-1 on the year and picked up their first win over a CAA foe since 2022.

Dempster led all Seawolves rushers with 179 yards and two touchdowns in the contest, averaging 5 yards per carry. Malachi Marshall finished with 157 yards through the air, completing passes to six different Seawolves’ receivers. The rookie quarterback added 24 yards on the ground.

Cole Bunicci, paced all of Stony Brook’s receivers in yardage, catching two passes for 35 yards. Dez Williams reeled in a team-leading four catches, totaling 27 yards. Jayden Cook and RJ Lamarre were efficient as well, finishing with more than 30 yards receiving.

The Seawolves won the turnover battle in Saturday’s game, forcing two turnovers while avoiding any giveaways. Stony Brook turned those takeaways into seven points. Jayson Allen and Nick Capazzola recovered fumbles and Kris Caine had 1.0 TFL and a sack in the win. Jordan Jackson secured a team-high five solo tackles, totaling six tackles. Shamoun Duncan-Niusulu and Anthony Ferrelli added five tackles while AJ Roberts and Chayce Chalmers racked up four apiece.

The Stony Brook offense did a good job extending drives, converting on 57.1 percent of third-down attempts and finishing 12-for-21. The Seawolves were also successful on their lone fourth down conversion attempt. The Seawolves took care of business in the red zone, scoring three times on three trips inside Campbell’s 20-yard line.

“First and foremost, I’m proud of our guys for getting a tough win on the road against a really good team in Campbell,” said head coach Billy Cosh said. “We ran the ball well and controlled the game by running the ball today, which was awesome. Our defense stepped up in critical moments; they had some lapses, but they finished and played hard.”

On September 15, Lightning Warriors hosted the 5th Annual Mini Maniac Youth Triathlon — the largest youth triathlon on the East Coast — which was held at Smith Point Beach in Shirley. The event attracted 181 participants between the ages of 5 and 17, including 56 first-time triathletes.

The Mini Maniac Youth Triathlon aims to promote healthy physical activity and build lifelong skills in swimming, biking, and running for youth athletes. This year’s race featured triathletes competing in different age groups, with distances tailored to each category. Younger athletes also had the opportunity to participate in the Splash & Dash, a 50-meter swim and a quarter-mile run for kids between 5 and 7 years old.

“We were thrilled to see so many young athletes take part in the event, especially those trying a triathlon for the first time,” said Noah Lam, head coach of the Lightning Warriors. “The smiles at the finish line are what this is all about, and we’re proud to help kids build confidence through sport.”

Participants received medals for their efforts, as well as favor bags and refreshments.

With both teams with three games under their belt, the Bulls of Smithtown West hosted the Centereach Cougars Thursday afternoon, Sept. 12, in a league matchup where a single goal would be the difference.

With three minutes left in the opening half, Smithtown West senior Jake Hutter dished off the ball to sophomore Tony Garcia who drilled the ball into the back of the net to edge ahead 1-0, a score that would make the final buzzer. 

Both goalies Jerry Nagosky (Bulls) and Thomas Zwirblis (Cougars) had two saves apiece.

The Bulls had another 1-0 victory — at East Islip — Monday, Sept. 16, taking them to 5-0 atop League V. On the same day, the Cougars won 3-1 at West Islip for a 2-1-2 league start.

Shoreham-Wading River football team kicked off their 2024 season, with a convincing victory, defeating Hampton Bays 40-12 at the Thomas Cutinella Memorial Field, on Saturday afternoon. 

It was the Sean Casey show for Shoreham-Wading River, as the senior wide receiver ran back the opening kickoff covering 88 yards to put the Wildcats on the board. Casey found the end zone at the 1:08 mark in the first quarter with a 32-yard run, and had another kickoff return in the opening minutes of the second half, covering 74 yards. 

Freshman quarterback Noah Gregorek threw a seven-yard touchdown precision strike to Michael Iberger in the right corner of the end zone, and completed eight of nine passes for 102 yards in the Division IV matchup.

Through five games, the Wildcats of Shoreham-Wading River stand atop the Division II leaderboard. The team is not only undefeated, but has not allowed a single goal against them.

Tuesday afternoon, Sept. 17, at the Thomas Cutinella Memorial Field, the Wildcats were back at it when they blanked West Islip 6-0.

Madison Herr scored her second goal of the game in the opening minutes of the second quarter to put her team out front 3-0. Forward Ella Frazzetto rocked the box in the opening minutes of the third quarter and Herr found the box again for her hat trick to begin the final 15 minutes of play. Alessia Olivio rounded out the score when her shot found its mark to seal the deal for the Wildcats.

The Comsewogue girls soccer squad, having won their last three games, looked to make it four in a row Saturday morning, Sept. 14, when the Warriors hosted Amityville, and did just that, by trouncing their opponents in an 8-0 blowout.

It was a team effort, with seven different players finding the net in the League VI contest. Mikaela Knot found the back of the net twice, and teammates Emma Cross, Kaiya Dent, Madison Maher, Kailey Wiggins, Madison Moccio and Jayla Callender each scored a goal apiece.

Goalies Lila Capra and Payton Coyle each had two stops.

The Warriors attempted to make it five in a row, with a road game against Harborfields, on Tuesday, but fell 3-1.

The Kings Park Kingsmen opened their season with a thud on Saturday, as they gave up three special team touchdowns in an unsightly 34-20 loss to the Islip Buccaneers.

Bucs return specialist and cornerback, Jake DeGenarro, returned a punt, for a 62-yard touchdown, and a kickoff, for a 93-yard touchdown, both early in the game, as Islip led 13-7 after the first quarter.

Kings Park running back Aidan Barbosa was responsible for a major portion of the Kingsmen offense.

He squirted open down the right sideline midway through the first quarter for a 32-yard touchdown reception, from Junior quarterback, Brandon Shapiro. Barbosa had two receptions for 36 yards, and 117 rushing yards, on the ground. Shapiro threw for two touchdowns, but was sacked by the Buccaneer defense 10 times.

Islip quarterback senior, Brady Nash, was 12 for 16, for 190 through the air, and added 60 on the ground, including a touchdown run of 12 yards. Bucs running back Christian Hall had a touchdown run of 17 yards, and he also blocked a field goal with his facemask, in the fourth quarter, picked up the loose ball and returned it 55 yards for a touchdown. He had 80 rushing yards on 11 attempts. 

For Kings Park, Frankie Buffolino had four receptions for 52 yards, including a touchdown catch in the fourth quarter. Kicker Alex Squillacioti made two field goals from 42 and 26 yards.

Islip will face the mighty Sayville Golden Flashes on Friday, Sept. 20th, while Kings Park will try to get on the winning track at home, against Amityville, also, on Friday evening, at 6:30.

It was a battle of the unbeaten between the Ward Melville Patriots and Bay Shore/Islip on Monday afternoon, Sept. 16, in a field hockey league matchup.

The Patriots pressured the Bay Shore defenders constantly with a 4-0 shutout over their visitors in the Division I contest. 

Ward Melville junior Hadley Torre found the back of the net twice, senior forward Peyton Phillips scored along with two assists and senior midfielder Jadyn Stoecker rocked the box. 

Bay Shore goalie Morgan Cousins had a busy day guarding the box with 18 saves, while Ward Melville’s keeper Olivia Zummo stopped two.

The win lifts the Patriots to the top of the Division I leaderboard.
