No. 14 Stony Brook women’s lacrosse took a five-goal lead into the fourth quarter, before Johns Hopkins erupted offensively for six goals through the final 15 minutes. The Seawolves fell short, 14-13, on March 1 at LaValle Stadium.

The Seawolves drop to 3-1 on the season as the Blue Jays won their third straight to improve to 4-2.

Stony Brook was led by Charlotte Wilmoth who netted four goals, as Isabella Caporuscio added a hat trick and both Riley McDonald and Courtney Maclay scored a pair. Casey Colbert tallied three points on one goal and two assists.

Defensively, Julia Fusco led the squad with three caused turnovers as Caporuscio and Allie Masera each tallied two. Caporuscio collected a game-high six ground balls while notching two draw controls, along with A. Fusco, Maclay, and Gianna Forte.

Johns Hopkins was led by Ava Angello who tallied six points on three goals and three assists. Ashley Mackin added four goals, while Lacey Downey notched three goals and one assist. Laurel Gonzalez had a game-high 13 draw controls for the Blue Jays.

HOW IT HAPPENED

Johns Hopkins’ Taylor Hoss scored the first goal of the game after a 5:57 scoreless stretch. Stony Brook scored twice with goals from A. Fusco and Wilmoth to take a 2-1 lead before a 3-2 lead courtesy of Caporuscio to finish the first quarter.

Three straight from the Seawolves (Maclay, McDonald, Colbert) started the second as the Blue Jays responded with four of their own amongst goals from Maclay and Wilmoth. Johns Hopkins would cut their deficit within two but still trail at halftime to Stony Brook, 8-6.

It would become a back-and-forth affair through the third quarter as the Seawolves and Blue Jays traded goals before a Stony Brook three goal run to take a 13-8 lead into the fourth quarter.

Five Johns Hopkins goals later, with only one minute remaining, Angello was able to net the game winner for the Blue Jays on a woman-up position. Stony Brook won the following draw, but a turnover ultimately gave Johns Hopkins the opportunity to run out the clock and take a victory back to Baltimore.

Up next, the team will hit the road once again to take on another Big Ten opponent in Rutgers on March 5 at 6 p.m. The Seawolves and Scarlet Knights will faceoff for the fifth straight season, with Stony Brook holding a 5-1 edge in all-time meetings.

A trifecta of four or more goal performances propelled the Stony Brook women’s lacrosse team to victory on Feb. 23 over upstate rival UAlbany. The Seawolves defeated the Great Danes 16-10, improving to 3-0 for a third consecutive season.

Isabella Caporuscio continued her impressive start to the season, pacing the Stony Brook offense with six points on four goals and two assists. Riley McDonald made her presence felt on the offensive end, tallying a game-high five goals, including her first as a Seawolf. Charlotte Wilmoth had herself a day, also notching four goals for her third straight multi-goal game and second hat trick of the season.

Alexandra Fusco added a pair of goals and an assist, while Julia Fusco notched a goal and an assist for the first multi-point game of her collegiate career. Casey Colbert led Stony Brook with a game-high three assists.

The Seawolves’ offense feasted on woman-up and free-position opportunities, scoring seven woman-up goals and three free-position.

On the defensive end, the Seawolves caused three turnovers and scooped up 13 ground balls. In the circle, Caporuscio recorded a game and career-high 11 draw controls. In net, Francesca Viteritti recorded a career-best six saves in a full 60 minutes of play.

After Stony Brook scored the game’s opening goal, UAlbany rattled off four straight goals to take a 4-1 lead late into the first. The Seawolves promptly responded with a 4-0 run of its own to retake the lead in the second, jumpstarted and capped off by goals from Caporuscio.

Big-time play on both ends helped Stony Brook outscore the Great Danes 7-2 in the second quarter and give the Seawolves a 10-6 advantage heading into the half. Quick goals from McDonald and Alexandra Fusco gave Stony Brook a 12-6 lead early in the third. 

A 4-1 UAlbany run cut its deficit to 13-10 with 7:25 remaining in the fourth. Stony Brook immediately answered with goals from Wilmoth, Caporuscio, and McDonald to put things out of reach for the Great Danes.

Up next, the team will resume play on March 1, for its home opener against No. 10 Johns Hopkins. First draw is scheduled for noon and will stream live on FloCollege.

The Stony Brook women’s lacrosse team pulled away from Villanova early and earned a 12-5 victory over the Wildcats on Feb. 19 in Villanova, Pennsylvania to pick up the squad’s second consecutive win.

The Seawolves were paced by eight different goal scorers with Haydin Eisfeld notching a career-high three goals for her first collegiate hat trick. Alexandra Fusco added a pair of goals and assists while Charlotte Wilmoth scored two goals herself. Casey Colbert led Stony Brook with a team and career-high four assists.

Defensively, Avery Hines tallied a single-game program record with eight caused turnovers while adding a career-high five ground balls. Courtney Maclay recorded five draw controls to lead the Seawolves in the circle. In net, Ava Yancey got her first collegiate start, making three saves through 60 full minutes of play.

For Villanova, Sydney Pappas led the Wildcats with two goals, as Madison Freeman, Elena Torres, and Jillian Vaught each notched one. Goalkeeper Makenzie Fisher made 10 saves in net on a .445 save percentage.

HOW IT HAPPENED

The Seawolves scored six straight goals in the span of 11 minutes to begin the contest, the first time since April 6, 2024, against Delaware. Julia Fusco capped the run with a woman-up goal dished out by her sister, Alex.

After a Villanova tally, Wilmoth struck again to put Stony Brook up 7-1 at the end of the first.

The Seawolves grabbed a 9-1 lead with 47 seconds to go in the half as Eisfeld scored in transition to keep Stony Brook on top.

Eisfeld scored again to open the third quarter, as the Wildcats responded and tallied a pair to close the gap, 10-3 heading into the fourth.

Villanova would score another two before Maclay and Kylie Budke capitalized on the Seawolves’ lead to secure a 12-5 victory.

“Really proud of our players and coaches, I always say you improve the most from game one to game two.  Our defense was ready to go, holding a potent offense to just 11 shots in the game.  That stat is incredible with the offensive power of Villanova.  Offensively, we showed spots of brilliance but there’s still so much room for improvement.  That’s the great thing about this group is that the ceiling is so high.  Really awesome for Avery to set that Stony Brook record as she was so in tune with the scout and the tendencies of the Nova offense. It’s great to start out 2-0, but it’s all eyes on UAlbany Sunday,” noted head coach Joe Spallina postgame.

Next up, the team  returns to action on February 23 as they head north to face in-state rival UAlbany. First draw is scheduled for 12 p.m. with coverage available on ESPN+. This will be the 31st meeting between the Seawolves and Great Danes in program history with Stony Brook leading 23-7 all-time.

In a back-and-forth affair, the No. 13 Stony Brook women’s lacrosse team defeated Bryant, 16-12, at Conaty Indoor Athletic Centerin Smithtfield, R.I. on Feb. 12 to open up the 2025 season.

Isabella Caporuscio finished with a career-high six goals, two assists, six draw controls, four caused turnovers, and four ground balls in the victory, leading the Seawolves in all categories.

Defensively, the squad totaled 21 caused turnovers and 18 ground balls. Along with Caporsucio, Alexa Constant led the Seawolves with four caused turnovers and four ground balls. Natalia Altebrando got her first start for Stony Brook, collecting a career-high three saves while Fracnesca Viteritti split time and made a career-high four saves.

For Bryant, Emily DeGeorge scored six times, while Riley O’Mara added three tallies and one for Amelia Piercy, Peyton Bosshardt, and Ashling Marshall each. Goalkeeper Sam Centofante made nine saves in net on a .321 save percentage.

HOW IT HAPPENEDAfter a Bryant tally to start the game, Caporuscio netted a pair to put the Seawolves ahead. The Bulldogs responded with a free position goal to tie it up as Maclay gave Stony Brook a 3-2 lead after the first quarter.

The Seawolves dominated through the second, scoring six of the eight goals total as Stony Brook put up 16 shots on goal in the first half compared to Bryant’s seven.

Stony Brook came out of the gate strong in the second half, scoring three straight goals for a 12-4 lead. The Bulldogs pieced together some offense to score four of their own ending the third with the Seawolves up 13-8.

The Stony Brook squad would outscore Bryant, 4-3, through the fourth quarter to secure the 16-12 victory in their season opener.

“Happy for our team to be 1-0, we went up by eight and let our foot off the gas and the game finished closer than it should of. That is something that we will learn from and get better.    Took a little time for us to adjust playing on the smaller field and with the lighting but our offense performed at a high level.  We expect our defense to be better than we were today and that will be a point of emphasis this week.  Overall, 1-0 and onto the next one,” head coach Joe Spallina said postgame.

The team continues their road slate on February 19 at Villanova with first draw set for 1 p.m. on FloCollege. The Seawolves are 2-0 against the Wildcats all-time, defeating them at LaValle Stadium in both 2015 and 2024.

For the second year in a row, the No. 14 Stony Brook women’s lacrosse team has won the CAA Championship after defeating the No. 2 seed Drexel, 9-6 on May 4. With the win, the Seawolves earn their 11th straight appearance in the NCAA Tournament, a streak that dates back to the 2013 season and they extended their season-long winning streak to 12 games in a row.

Stony Brook captured its 10th conference championship title in program history (two CAA, eight America East) and won its ninth at home inside Kenneth P. LaValle Stadium.

The Seawolves were fueled by a standout defensive effort en route to victory as they limited the Dragons to just six goals, 15 shots, and eight shots on goal. In addition, the Stony Brook defense forced 18 turnovers and held Drexel’s top scorer Corinne Bednarik to just one goal and a season-high seven turnovers.  

 After trailing 2-0 midway through the second quarter, Stony Brook senior defender Clare Levy charged towards goal with a full head of steam and found the back of the net for the Seawolves’ first goal of the game. The Stony Brook crowd erupted when Levy scored, and it gave the Seawolves the momentum that it needed to close out the first half.

Drexel took a narrow 3-2 lead into the halftime break after the teams traded goals to close out the second quarter. Stony Brook took control of the game in the second half and used a 6-0 run to take the lead and never looked back.

The run was fueled by five different goal scorers as Ellie Masera (scored twice), graduate attack Kailyn Hart, graduate midfielder Charlotte Verhulst, graduate midfielder Erin MacQuarrie, and graduate attack Morgan Mitchell all tallied goals over the run.

Masera led all players with a game-high three goals to pace the scoring for the Seawolves. Hart registered a pair of goals for her 15th multi-goal performance of the season and 11th in a row. The aforementioned Levy, Verhulst, Mitchell and MacQuarrie all tallied one goal apiece.

 Verhulst helped the Seawolves win the battle for the draws as she recorded a season-high seven draw controls, which allowed Stony Brook to out-draw Drexel, 12-5. Masera added a pair of draw controls and set the Seawolves’ single-season record for most draw controls with 136. The senior moved past Kerri McCarthy, who previously held the record with 135 draw controls in 2018.

Defensively, Hines continued her dominance as she caused five more turnovers and she too set a Stony Brook single-season record. With her 60 caused turnovers, Hines moves past Brook Gubitosi (55 in 2017) for the most caused turnovers in a single season in program history.

Four Seawolves earned All-Championship Team honors for their standout play in the tournament. Masera, Verhulst, Hart, and Levy were named members of the All-Championship Team, with Masera taking home the Most Outstanding Performer honor.

Head coach Joe Spallina is now 21-1 in conference tournament games as Stony Brook head coach and the Seawolves have won 20 consecutive conference tournament games under him.

“What a crazy game, right? I’m really happy for our players,” said Coach Spallina postgame. “Drexel came in and played a hard game. … I’m proud of how our players responded. Defensively I thought we were phenomenal the entire game, and I thought we played really good offense. For the seniors to go out with a win at LaValle Stadium, that’s apropos,” he said.

Up next, the team is set to take on MAAC Champion Niagara in the first round of the 2024 NCAA Tournament in Syracuse on May 10, at 2 p.m., as announced during the Selection Show on May 5. The winner of the first round matchup will face No. 3 seeded Syracuse on May 12.

Coach Joe Spallina earns 200th win at Stony Brook

Stony Brook women’s lacrosse used an offensive explosion to defeat Delaware, 17-4, on Senior Day, April 6. The Seawolves were led by graduate attack Kailyn Hart who scored a career-high seven goals, six of which came in the first half of play.

With the win, Stony Brook head coach Joe Spallina earned his 200th victory with the Seawolves. Spallina improves to 200-39 over his 13 seasons at Stony Brook and 273-41 over his head coaching career.

Hart led a trio of Seawolves who tallied hat tricks in the win. Senior midfielder Ellie Masera and graduate midfielder Charlotte Verhulst each found the back of the net three times apiece.

Stony Brook also dominated on the defensive end as it limited Delaware to a season-low four goals. The Seawolves outshot the Blue Hens, 32-7, and recorded 26 shots on goals to Delaware’s six. The Seawolves also won the battle of the turnovers as they forced 22 turnovers, nine of which were caused, and only turned it over 13 times.

Junior defender Avery Hines helped anchor the defense as she caused a career-high six turnovers and scooped up three ground balls. Her six caused turnovers are the most in a game by a Stony Brook player since Haley Dillon forced six turnovers vs. Vermont on March 26, 2022.

Stony Brook opened the game on an 8-0 scoring run, with Hart rattling the cage four times over the span. Senior attack Maggie Reznick and senior attack Hayden Lachenmeyer each scored their first career goals in the first quarter.

The Seawolves added to their lead in the second quarter and took a commanding, 11-2, lead into the halftime break. Stony Brook surrendered just three shots in the first half and forced 14 turnovers.

Stony Brook continued to cruise in the second half as it outscored Delaware, 6-2, over the final 30 minutes on its way to the 17-4 victory. Masera scored all three of her goals in the second half, while Verhulst scored two of her three goals.

No. 15 Stony Brook women’s lacrosse wrapped up the month of March with an 18-8 victory against Monmouth at Kessler Stadium on March 29. The Seawolves picked up their fourth straight win, moving to 9-2 (4-0) on the season while Monmouth dropped to 5-6 (1-3 CAA).

The team was led by graduate student Kailyn Hart who scored four goals on the afternoon. Graduate student Charlotte Verhulst and junior Courtney Maclay each netted three goals, while senior Clare Levy added two. Six more players finished off one goal on the afternoon. Stony Brook tallied nine assists on Friday, led by graduate student Erin MacQuarrie and senior Jaden Hampel with two each.

Graduate student McKenzie Mitchell picked up three ground balls and Levy added two, while Mitchell and Emily Manning caused two turnovers each. Manning made six saves in the second half, allowing just two goals, while senior Aaliyah Jones got the start and made four stops on a .400 save percentage. In the circle, Levy collected a career-high nine draw controls while Verhulst contributed four of her own.

 Monmouth was led by Maddie Flynn who put up a hat trick, while Shea Berigan and Ella Spears each scored twice. Goalkeeper Katie Sullivan made eight saves on the afternoon.

 “Excited to be 4-0 in conference, and for our players to get a few days off to refuel and get right as we head into another very difficult part of our schedule,” said head coach Joe Spallina. “I really love this group and I know our best lacrosse is ahead of us.”

The team heads home to continue conference play, facing Delaware on April 6 at LaValle Stadium. Opening draw is set for noon on FloLive and Stony Brook will honor its women’s lacrosse seniors prior to the game. Stony Brook is 5-0 all-time against the Blue Hens, winning 18-6 in both the regular season and the conference tournament last year.

No. 14 Stony Brook women’s lacrosse scored the game’s first 16 goals en route to a dominating 21-3 victory over Campbell at LaValle Stadium on March 24.

 The Seawolves moved to 8-2 (3-0 CAA) in their first 10 games while Campbell dropped to 3-7 (0-3 CAA).

 Stony Brook was led Kailyn Hart with five goals, and the graduate student added two assists for seven points. Classmate Alex Finn set a career high with eight assists, while graduate student Jolie Creo added three. Classmates Morgan Mitchell and Charlotte Verhulst each had hat tricks while senior Jaden Hampel and sophomore Alexandra Fusco each scored twice.

 The defense was led by graduate student Kira Accettella and junior Avery Hines with two caused turnovers, while five others caused one. Stony Brook got two ground balls each from Hines, Verhulst and senior Clare Levy. Four different goalkeepers played on the afternoon, with senior Aaliyah Jones making four saves without a goal against in her first career start. Sophomore Francesca Viteritti also made four stops on the afternoon while freshman Hannah Hudson made two saves.

In the draw circle, Stony Brook was led by Levy with five draw controls, while Charlotte Verhulst added four and Hampel and freshman Isabella Caporuscio each added two.

Lexi Goff scored twice for the Camels while Mattie Riter added the other tally.

The Seawolves scored all 10 goals in the first quarter, with three coming from Mitchell and two each from Fusco and Verhulst. Finn dished out five assists in the first quarter alone. Hart scored four of Stony Brook’s five goals in the second quarter, extending the lead to 15-0 at halftime. Aaliyah Jones kept the game scoreless with two saves in each of the first and second quarters. Hampel and Millen each scored in the third, as Stony Brook carried a 17-2 lead into the fourth. Viteritti made four saves in the third period on a .667 save percentage.

Four different players scored in the fourth, with three goals coming from freshmen, as Stony Brook extended the lead as big as 21-2.

Up next, the team wraps up the month with a matchup at Monmouth on March 29, with first draw against the Hawks scheduled for 1 p.m. on FloLive.

Stony Brook women’s lacrosse scored 11 of the first 13 goals and got career offensive performances from Alex Finn and Ellie Masera to open the 2024 season with an 18-11 victory at LaValle Stadium on Feb 18.

Stony Brook (1-0) got a career-high eight goals and 10 points from Masera along with a career-high seven assists and nine points from Finn. Masera took 16 of Stony Brook’s 36 shots in the game. Kailyn Hart also added five goals on eight shots (.625), with Charlotte Verhulst getting in the scoring column twice and Morgan Mitchell once.

Defensively, the Seawolves had six caused turnovers and 10 ground balls as a team. Clare Levy and Emily Manning each caused two turnovers. Manning led the way with three ground balls and Finn, Levy and Masera each picked up two. In her first start as a Seawolf, Emily Manning made eight saves with a .421 save percentage.

In the possession game, Stony Brook got six draw controls each from Masera and Clare Levy, with Verhulst adding three.

For Dartmouth, Kate Elders scored four times, while Catherine Erb added three tallies and Lucy Murray scored twice. Goalkeeper Gisele Todd made nine saves in net on a .360 save percentage.

 The team is back home on Feb. 20 to take on Bryant, with first draw scheduled for 3 p.m. The Bulldogs are 2-1 on the season with wins over Holy Cross and Sacred Heart. Stony Brook is 3-0 against Bryant all-time and this will be the two teams’ first meeting since 2019.

For the 10th season in a row, the Stony Brook women’s lacrosse team (14-3, 7-0 CAA) is headed to the NCAA Tournament. The Seawolves are set to go head-to-head with Penn State (11-6, 3-3 Big Ten) on Friday, May 12, at 7 p.m., in Baltimore, Md. on the campus of Loyola Maryland as announced during the May 9 selection show.

Stony Brook earned the CAA’s automatic bid into the NCAA Tournament after it claimed its first-ever CAA Championship in dominant fashion on Saturday afternoon. The Seawolves downed Towson, 19-4, en route to their ninth conference tournament title. Stony Brook’s 19 goals were a CAA Championship game record, and the 15-goal margin of victory was the largest ever in a title game.

The winner of Stony Brook vs. Penn State will take on the winner of Loyola Maryland and Fairfield on Sunday, May 14. It marks the third time in history that the Seawolves and Nittany Lions will meet and the first time that the teams square off in the NCAA Tournament. Stony Brook is 2-0 all-time against Penn State and picked up a 16-11 win in their last meeting on April 23, 2019, in University Park, Pa.

Four Seawolves were tabbed to the CAA All-Tournament Team following Saturday’s historic win. Ellie Masera, Hailey Duchnowski, Kailyn Hart, and Clare Levy all earned All-Tournament Team honors and Masera was named the Most Outstanding Performer of the tournament after she recorded 14 points (nine goals, five assists) and 19 draw controls.

Stony Brook made its mark on the CAA as it ran the table in league play, going 7-0, and the team had eight individuals earn CAA postseason honors. Masera was tabbed the CAA Midfielder of the Year and head coach Joe Spallina earned the CAA Coach of the Year honor. For Spallina, it was his seventh conference Coach of the Year award.

Masera was also tabbed to the All-CAA First Team and was joined by Hart and Levy. Morgan Mitchell, Jaden Hampel, Charlotte Verhulst, and Haley Dillon all earned All-CAA Second Team honors.

Stony Brook has advanced to the NCAA Tournament quarterfinals four times in its past five appearances. Last season, the Seawolves earned an at-large berth into the NCAA Tournament and defeated Drexel and Rutgers before falling to eventual National Champion North Carolina in the quarterfinals.
