The Stony Brook men’s track and field team showcased several impressive performances at the 59th annual Colonial Relays on April 4 and April 5, going on to pick up three event wins, including a big win in the Distance Medley Relay in Williamsburg, Va.

The relays opened with a bang for the Seawolves as Collin Gilstrap and Henry Gartner triumphed in their respective events.

DAY ONE HIGHLIGHTS

  • Gartner raced to a first-place finish in the 5000m. His time of 14:18.02 earned him a new PR and established a new team-best mark for the season in this event.
  • Gilstrap won the 1500m race with a time of 3:47.39, setting a new season-best for Stony Brook in the event.
  • Ethan Green placed fourth in the 1500m (3:48.93).
  • Steven Struk placed sixth in the 5000m. His solid final time of 14:25.92 was a new PR in the event.
  • Mario Xerri finished seventh in 800m (1:55.93)

“It was a good first day. It’s always nice to get a win or two at this meet,” head coach Andy Ronan noted. “Collin and Henry had strong finishing laps to secure their win in the 1500m and 5000m, respectively. I was also very pleased with Ethan, Steven, and Joseph Bertola, who won the second section of the 5K.”

Stony Brook wrapped up the competition on Saturday by winning the highly touted DMR race.

DAY TWO HIGHLIGHTS

  • Gilstrap, Xerri, Walesky Nowak, and Green teamed up to win the DMR event. Their time of 10:06.03 set a new season-best time for the Seawolves.
  • Stony Brook placed fourth in the 4×1500 relay (16:18.33) courtesy of Thomas Burfeind, Ryan Hesler, Brian Liebowitz, and Collin McLaughlin.

“Day two at the Colonial Relays is all about relays, and it was a really nice opportunity for our program to add Stony Brook to the long list of top programs on the East Coast that have won a relay event at this meet,” said Ronan. “We picked up wins for the men and the women today. Not to be outdone by the ladies, the men’s DMR took care of business in that event and came home with the win. Again, a strong lead-off leg by Collin (1200m) was the key; he gave the other legs of Walesky (400m), Mario (800m), and Freshman Ethan anchor leg (mile) room to relax and run controlled in the windy, warm conditions. The men’s 4x 1500 of Burfeind, Hesler, Liebowitz,  and McLaughlin were in contention for a lot of the race but, in the end, finished up 4th, just missing out on a top 3 finish by less than a second.”

The team continues their busy April slate on April 11 when they travel to Providence for the Friar Invitational.

The Stony Brook men’s track and field team returned to competition on March 29 for the Monmouth Season Opener in West Long Branch, New Jersey. The Seawolves posted several solid showings on the day, including three top-eight placements.

HIGHLIGHTS

  • Mario Xerri finished fifth in the 800m (1:55.98).
  • Steven Struk placed seventh in the 1500m event (4:00.39).
  • The team of Luke Clackett, Michael Ye, Ryan Scarry, and Walesky Nowak finished seventh in the 4x100m relay (43.39).

“It was a solid day at Monmouth Today,” head coach Andy Ronan said. “I feel a lot of the athletes are trying to adjust from the false environment of running indoors to having to deal with the elements of outdoor track. And they certainly got a taste of what outdoor conditions can be like. We had a very warm, windy day, and you could see athletes struggling to deal with both. On the men’s side, Mario and Steven were the most competitive on the day, with good runs.”

The team is back in action on April 4 and 5, competing at the Colonial Relays in Williamsburg, Virginia. Both days of the meet are scheduled to begin at 9 a.m.

The Stony Brook University men’s indoor track and field program opened the 2024-25 season at the Rutgers Holiday Classic on Dec. 6 at The Armory in NYC. The Seawolves posted several solid performances as a team, with five different runners setting new personal bests.

Stony Brook’s best two placements of the day came from Seth Hilario in the 60-meter hurdles and Michael Ye in the 200-meter, who both placed sixth in their respective races.

The Seawolves secured three top-ten placements in the 3,000-meter race with Ryan Hesler (eighth, 8:40.44), Collin McLoughlin (ninth, 8:41.10, and Finn Burke (10th, 8:43.19). Burke’s impressive time was a new personal best in the event. Joseph Bertola (11th, 8:44.07), Matthew Windecker (12th, 8:45.82), and Luca Maneri (15th, 8:47.64) all recorded new personal bests in the 3,000-meter. Fernando Diaz (13th, 2:35.16) set a new best in 1,000-meter.

“Our athletes, who have been training consistently over the past few months, had an opportunity today to break out of the daily training and get a taste of competition,” head coach Andy Ronan said. “It was a typical first meet; we saw a little bit of everything, but there were some encouraging performances from several younger runners. There is still work to be done, but we’re optimistic about what the track seasons ahead may bring.”

The team resumes action in the new year on January 10 at the Spartan Invitational at Ocean Breeze Athletic Complex in Staten Island.

Collin Gilstrap won the 1,500-meter, finishing with a time of 3:44.33. He was Stony Brook’s lone event winner. George Franks took second place in the 400-meter, setting a new school record with a time of 45.88. He also finished seventh in the 200-meter.

Evan Brennan placed second in the 10,000-meter with a time of 30:39.11. Michael Fama finished fourth in the 10K (31:19.09). Carlos Santos produced podium finishes in the 3,000-meter steeplechase (2nd, 8:55.79) and 5,000-meter (3rd, 14:42.22). Shane Henderson and Brennan also notched top-eight finishes in the 5,000-meter to earn points.

The Stony Brook University women’s track and field program finished 11th at the championships. Fiona McLoughlin completed the 10K in 35:55.39, placing second and earning a silver medal. She also finished seventh in the 5,000-meter (16:44.30). Grace Weigele placed fourth in the 5K, running it in 16:16.06 to pace a quartet of Seawolves competing in the event. Rebecca Clackett took fifth in the 1,500-meter with a time of 4:34.05. Danella Dawkins earned a seventh-place finish in the 100-meter hurdles (14.33). The women’s 4×100 relay quartet took seventh and the 4×400 relay quartet finished in eighth place.

“Really pleased with the effort our teams gave over the two days. The majority of our group that were expected to make the finals did; those that were seeded high in their particular event also got the job done. Obviously Collin and George were outstanding, showed great competitiveness and maturity for freshmen. Evan and Fiona battled hard in the 10,000m then came back on day two to score in the 5K’s,” head coach Andy Ronan noted. “Carlos produced two podium performances in the steeplechase and 5000m, again showing his determination to produce quality results for his team.”

“Our team placings are not where we want to be; we are in a very competitive conference, but with time and support we can build with George and Collin to be more competitive as an overall team,” Ronan added.

Over the two days I thought George Franks did very well with two really encouraging performances in the 200 & 400. The guys in the 5K put together a strong run,” head coach Andy Ronan commented. “Another weekend where we saw noticeable improvement in some of our student-athletes’ fitness and competitiveness.”

The Stony Brook University men’s track and field program competed at the Dr. Sander Invite, hosted by Columbia University, at the Armory in New York City on Jan. 27 and 28.  Shane Henderson finished third in the 5K, posting an IC4A qualifying time.

HIGHLIGHTS

  • Henderson put Stony Brook in the top three in the men’s 5000-meter, crossing the finish line in 14:01.64. His time qualified him for the 1C4A Championships in March.
  • Also qualifying for the IC4A Championships was Collin Gilstrap, who finished the mile in 4:06.01 which placed 10th for this weekend’s meet.

“Shane was in with a chance for the win with about 600 meters to go but came up a little short but still this was his best opening indoor 5000m performance of any season,” head coach Andy Ronan noted. “Today, I was very impressed with Collin’s run in his first collegiate mile race, ran one of the fastest mile times by a freshman in our program’s history, and has an exciting future over this distance.”
