Mattituck and the Port Jefferson Royals met twice in the boys basketball regular season and the Tuckers came out on top on both occasions. The Royals looked to avenge those losses when both teams collided again in Suffolk Class B County final March 2 at St. Joseph’s University.

Mattituck edged ahead with a four-point advantage coming out of the halftime break and the Royals clawed their way back to their first lead of the game in the closing seconds of the third quarter. The lead would be short lived as Mattituck’s defense surged  and were able to hold off the Royals in the final eight minutes of play to secure a 58-50 victory. The win sends the Tuckers to the Long Island Championship round at Farmingdale State College March 16.

Seniors Ryan Sommerstad topped the scoring chart for the Royals with 14 points and Patrick Johnston added 13. Sophomore guard Daniels Rose netted 10.

The Port Jeff Royals (3-8) were hungry for a much-needed win when Mattituck (4-6) came calling in a League VII matchup. While the Royals trailed by one point at the half and led by a single point to open the fourth quarter, neither team led the other by more than four points throughout the matchup. The Tuckers were able to keep the Royals at bay in the final minutes to hold on for a 44-41 victory Tuesday afternoon, Jan. 14.

It was Mattituck freshman Connor Searl who topped the scoring chart for the Tuckers with 19 points. Patrick Johnston, the senior, netted 17 points for the Royals, and sophomore Dan Rose added 11.

The Royals retake the court Jan. 16 when they host Center Moriches. Game time is slated for 4:30 p.m.

It was all Port Jefferson in a league VII home game against Shelter Island where the Royals made short work of the Islanders with a 71-11 victory Jan. 11. 

Senior Peter Murphy led the way for the Royals with 7 rebounds and 6 field goals for 12 points, Steven Bayer hit a triple and 4 field goals for 11 and Conor Daily banked 10. 

The win lifts the Royals to 6-2 in league 6-3 overall. Port Jeff retakes the court Jan. 13 with another home game against Greenport. Tip-off is at 6:15 p.m.
