In celebration of the 30th anniversary of “When Harry Met Sally” Turner Classic Movies, Warner Bros. and Fathom Events brings the popular rom-com back to 700 select theaters on Dec. 1 and 3. 

The Rob Reiner-directed, Nora Ephron-penned classic was initially released on July 14, 1989 and went on to gross $92.8 million domestically before Ephron’s original screenplay received an Oscar nomination at the following year’s Academy Awards.

Harry Burns (Billy Crystal) and Sally Albright (Meg Ryan) meet on a long drive from New York to Chicago — during which Harry claims that women and men can never be “just friends.” Over the years, Harry and Sally keep running into each other, claiming to have nothing more than a platonic friendship — until a climactic New Year’s Eve Party that threatens (or promises) to upend their assumptions about each other and about love. 

Carrie Fisher and Bruno Kirby co-star in the film, which the BBC, Paste Magazine and Vogue all have called one of the best romantic comedies of all time.

In celebration of the 45th anniversary of “The Godfather Part II,” Turner Classic Movies and Fathom Events brings the iconic film back to 600 select theaters on Nov. 10, 12 and 13.  

In what is undeniably one of the best sequels ever made, Francis Ford Coppola continues his epic Godfather trilogy with this saga of two generations of power within the Corleone family. 

Coppola, working once again with the author Mario Puzo, crafts two interwoven stories that work as both prequel and sequel to the original. One shows the humble Sicilian beginnings and New York rise of a young Don Vito, played by Robert De Niro in an Oscar-winning performance for Best Supporting Actor. The other shows the ascent of Michael (Al Pacino) as the new don protecting the family business in the aftermath of an attempt on his life. 

Coppola reassembled many of the cast members who helped make “The Godfather” including Robert Duvall, Diane Keaton, John Cazale and Talia Shire. Marlon Brando was scheduled to be in one scene but did not show up for filming. The film ended up receiving 11 Academy Awards nominations, winning six including Best Picture of 1974.

“You can get busy living … or get busy dying.”

It’s been 25 years since “The Shawshank Redemption” was first released. To celebrate the momentous anniversary, the classic film will return to more than 600 select theaters nationwide on Sept. 22, 24 and 25, courtesy of Warner Bros., Turner Classic Movies and Fathom Events.

Written and directed by Frank Darabont, with a wonderful score by Thomas Newman, the film, based on the 1982 Stephen King short story, “Rita Hayworth and Shawshank Redemption” from his 1982 collection “Different Seasons,” was not a blockbuster when it was released on Sept. 24, 1994. It grossed $28.3 million on a $25 million budget. However, it received seven Oscar nominations and went on to become one of the most-celebrated films in history when released on video.

In 2015 the United States Library of Congress selected the film for preservation in the National Film Registry, calling it “culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant,” and it has been the number 1 film on IMDb’s user-generated Top 250 since 2008, when it surpassed “The Godfather.”

The film tells a story of human kindness in the most unkind place: prison, specifically Shawshank State Penitentiary. Both serving a life sentence, inmates, Ellis “Red” Redding (Morgan Freeman) and Andy Dufresne (Tim Robbins), a mild-mannered banker wrongly convicted of murdering his wife and her lover, forge an unlikely bond that will span more than 20 years. Together they discover hope as the ultimate means of survival.

The film also stars Bob Gunton (Warden Norton), William Sadler (Heywood), Clancy Brown (Captain Hadley), Gil Bellows (Tommy) and James Whitmore as Brooks.

In a recent interview with Chris Lindahl of IndieWire, Darabont said, “I think people want to believe that there is goodness and a moral compass in the world. And I think that’s why ‘Shawshank’ has [such an] effect on people.”

The film tells the tale of Ray Kinsella (Kevin Costner) as he follows a vision and a mysterious voice (“If you build it, he will come.”) encouraging him to build a baseball diamond in his cornfield. Along the way, he encounters ghosts of famous baseball players, including “Shoeless Joe” Jackson, and wrestles with his rocky relationship with his late father.

Upon its release in 1989, the film earned critical acclaim, an eventual Oscar nomination for Best Picture and the adoration of dads everywhere. Fiddle-dee-dee! It’s been 80 years since “Gone With the Wind” was first released and to celebrate the momentous anniversary, the classic film will return to select theaters nationwide on Thursday, Feb. 28 and Sunday, March 3, courtesy of Warner Bros., Turner Classic Movies and Fathom Events.

The film, which premiered in 1939, won eight Oscars and received two additional honorary Oscars, making it one of the most honored movies ever.

The epic drama, based on the 1936 novel by Margaret Mitchell, stars Vivien Leigh, Leslie Howard, Clark Gable and Olivia de Havilland (the film’s last surviving principal cast member at 102!) and Hattie McDaniel, who was the first black actor to ever win an Oscar.

Set in Georgia during the turbulent times of the Civil War and the Reconstruction period, the film follows the life of Scarlett O’Hara, a spirited Southern belle who tries to keep her family’s plantation afloat amid a series of romantic affairs.

The special screening includes a 4-minute intermission.

In honor of its 80th anniversary, “The Wizard of Oz” returns to over 700 select theaters nationwide on Jan. 27, 29 and 30, courtesy of Fathom Events and Turner Classic Movies. The beloved classic will include an exclusive commentary by TCM host Ben Mankiewicz.

The 1939 musical fantasy film, based on the 1900 children’s book by L. Frank Baum, starred Judy Garland as Dorothy Gale, a young girl who dreams of more than her life on a small Kansas farm and suddenly finds herself whisked away by a tornado to the magical world of Oz.

The Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer film was nominated for several Academy Awards upon its release, including Best Picture, which it lost to “Gone with the Wind” but won for Best Song (“Over the Rainbow”) and Best Original Score.

Considered to be one of the greatest films in cinema history, “The Wizard of Oz” was one of the earliest films to be deemed “culturally significant” by the United States Library of Congress and was selected for preservation in the National Film Registry.

Ring in the holiday season when Irving Berlin’s beloved “White Christmas” returns to select cinemas nationwide for a two-day celebration on Dec. 9 and 12, courtesy of Turner Classic Movies and Fathom Events.

Originally released in 1954, the classic film stars Bing Crosby (Bob) and Danny Kaye (Phil). After Phil saves Bob’s life in the army, the two become a widely popular vaudeville musical act. They agree to see a sister act as a favor to an old army buddy. The sisters, Rosemary Clooney (Betty) and Vera-Ellen (Judy) are going to Vermont to perform at an inn and Phil, determined to play matchmaker, sneakily arranges for himself and Bob to go along. When they realize the owner of the failing inn is their former general, the duo decide to bring their entire musical act to Vermont in a secret attempt to bring in guests and give back to the man that meant so much to them.

Directed by Michael Curtiz (“Casablanca”), “White Christmas” includes such Berlin classics as “Sisters,” “Snow,” “Blue Skies,” “Count Your Blessings Instead of Sheep” and the enduring title song.

Presented as the final film in the 2018 TCM Big Screen Classics series, the screenings include new commentary by TCM Primetime host Ben Mankiewicz.

“Something’s coming, something good …” 

Fifty-seven years after its world premiere screening at the Rivoli Theatre in New York City, the award-winning musical “West Side Story” will return to over 600 select cinemas nationwide on June 24 and 27, courtesy of Turner Classic Movies and Fathom Events.

Starring Natalie Wood, Rita Moreno, Russ Tamblyn, Richard Beymer and George Chakiris the film takes inspiration from Shakespeare’s “Romeo and Juliet” and turns the Montague-Capulet battle into a feud between two New York City street gangs — the Jets and the Sharks. When a member of the Jets falls in love with the sister of the Sharks’ leader, things look hopeful at first, but rapidly go downhill. Illustrating the events are many memorable song and dance numbers such as “America,” “Tonight,” “A Boy Like That,” “One Hand, One Heart,” “Somewhere” and “I Feel Pretty.”

With book by Arthur Laurents, music by Leonard Bernstein and lyrics from Stephen Sondheim, the film went on to win 10 Oscars at the 34th Academy Awards, including Best Picture and both supporting acting awards, for Chakiris and Moreno, becoming the record holder for the most wins for a movie musical. Deemed “culturally significant” by the United States Library of Congress, it was selected for the National Film Registry in 1997.

The film will be presented in its original wide-screen aspect ratio and include a mid-film intermission, as was featured in the original theatrical release. It will also include pre- and postshow commentary from TCM host Ben Mankiewicz.

Fathom Events, Turner Classic Movies, Studiocanal and Rialto Pictures are celebrating the 50th anniversary of “The Producers” by bringing the classic movie to select cinemas nationwide for a special two-day event on Sunday, June 3, and Wednesday, June 6.

The 1967 satirical comedy film stars Zero Mostel, Gene Wilder, Dick Shawn and Kenneth Mars. The film was Mel Brooks’ directorial debut, and he won an Academy Award for Best Original Screenplay. In 1996, the film was deemed “culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant” by the  Library of Congress and selected for preservation in the National Film Registry.

Once the King of the Great White Way, Max Bialystock (Mostel) is reduced to romancing old ladies to finance his next flop show. But when nervous accountant Leopold Bloom (Wilder) surmises that more money could be made from a flop than a hit, the next step is to produce the Busby Berkeleyesque musical “Springtime for Hitler” and to cast stoned-out Flower Child “LSD” (Shawn) in the lead. A surefire flop, or is it?

The special screening also features an interview between TCM host Ben Mankiewicz and Brooks.
