Having won their season opener convincingly with an 11-2 blowout over Wyandanch, the Port Jefferson Lady Royals soccer team made it two in a row in a home game against Hampton Bays Tuesday afternoon, Sept. 10.
Port Jeff senior, Emily Snyder, broke free in the final minutes of the first half and drilled a shot to the back of the net unassisted to break the deadlock. Nina Gnatenko’s shot to the corner of the net provided the insurance goal but the freshman wasn’t finished yet. She struck again with a header into the back of the net off a corner kick to put her team ahead 3-0 for a comfortable victory.
Port Jeff hit the road with an away game at East Hampton on Sept. 11 but the result was not available before press time. The Royals next home game will be against Babylon on Friday, Sept. 13. Game time is slated for 4:30 p.m.

As the saying goes, “The show must go on,” and despite high temperatures,in the shared parking lot of East Wind and The Shoppes in Wading River, the show did go on, as it does every Wednesday evening from 5 to 9 p.m. through October with a Cruise Night Car Show.
Packing the lot was a full complement of vintage classic cars and souped up muscle cars, along with the most modern exotic automobiles.
The area’s business owners welcome the enthusiastic, Wednesday night cruisers, because they bring their appetites and peruse the community’s various speciality shops.
After early morning clouds, the skies cleared and the North Shore was treated to comfortable temperatures under brilliant sunshine with activities for all on Labor Day weekend.

The action was in full steam at the Three Village Tennis Club Saturday morning, Aug. 17, with both singles and mixed doubles play. The club is nestled behind The Setauket Neighborhood House on Main Street, in East Setauket.
Mostly hidden from view lies seven clay courts, that members can use from April 1 through mid-November, weather permitting. The club was established in 1959, with a single hard court, and over the years, added six more — all of which are now clay.
Tennis director, Paul Smith, could be seen restringing members rackets, and said the club has 280 active memberships, many of which are families, putting the club north of 400 players.
Asked what the single most important message, he’d like to convey about the club, to the public, Smith said, “It’s a very family-oriented club, it’s very active, with a relatively low cost to join.”
More information about the Three Village Tennis Club can be found on its website: www.threevillagetennisclub.com.

Shoreham-Wading River girls varsity soccer team looked to build on the success of their 2023 campaign when the Wildcats won another Suffolk County Class A title and Long Island championship. The team advanced to the state championships last November at Cortland High School before losing the Class A final to Rye.
The Wildcats faced off against Bay Shore in Islip High School summer league action Thursday, Aug. 8. It was Ava Gengler’s foot that stretched the net to take the early lead. On a corner kick, Olivia Pesso floated the ball up high in front of the net where Abigail Cooke headed the ball in for the insurance goal. Shoreham-Wading River inked the 2-0 victory in the fourth game of the tournament with two games remaining.
The Wildcats launch their 2024 season with a home opener Sept. 11 when they will host Mount Sinai. Game time is slated for 4:30 p.m.

Unlike high school varsity basketball, the Town of Brookhaven summer league has just one division for girls varsity basketball where the smallest school will face a much larger school at some point in the 10-game season.
Such was the case Monday night, July 29, in the Mount Sinai High School gym where the Lady Royals of Port Jeff faced a much larger school, the Bulls of Smithtown East. Port Jeff, looking for that elusive first win, were valiantly unable to gain traction in falling to the Bulls 32-21. The win lifts Smithtown East to 6-2-1 with one game remaining.
