With six minutes left in the fourth quarter of a League II matchup between the Patriots of Ward Melville and the Sachem East Arrows, the game began anew with both teams deadlocked at 49-49.

Ward Melville senior Neelesh Raghurama did what he’s done all season, seemingly able to score from anywhere on the court and looking particularly comfortable from long range. Whether it was knocking down seven free throws, hitting a trio of three-pointers, or making three field goals, the senior topped the Patriots’ scoring chart with 22 points to lead his team to a 63-56 road victory Thursday night, Jan. 9.

Teammates Eddie Shields and Jack Degen scored 9 points each, while Logan Seta and James Coffey netted 8 points apiece, and Brennan Kurts added 7.

The win lifts the Patriots to 4-0 in league play and 9-3 overall, while the loss drops Sachem East to 5-6.

It was Ward Melville’s Neelesh Raghurama who set the tempo for the Patriots in a home game against Commack, where the senior guard seemed to be able to score at will.

Whether it was driving the lane, shooting from long distance or being error free at the charity stripe, Raghurama led his team with 8 field goals, two triples and three from the free throw line, for 25 points defeating Commack 60-44 on Dec.16. Teammates James Coffey, the freshman point guard, netted 15 points, and Logan Seta and Jack Degen banked 6 points apiece in the League II matchup.

Jonny Ehlers topped the scoring chart for the Cougars with 10 points and Tyler Wilhelm added 9.

The Patriots of Ward Melville were no match for the visiting Bulls of Smithtown East in both teams’ season opener Saturday afternoon, where the Bulls broke out early in the opening quarter and never looked back, trampling the Patriots 77-39 in the non-league matchup Nov. 30.

Craig O’Neill, a junior, led the way for Smithtown East with seven field goals and five from the free-throw line for a team high of 19 points. Seniors Nico Skartsiaris netted 11 points, and Tom Fanning added 10.

Ward Melville senior Neelesh Raghurama topped the scoring chart for the Patriots, banking 10 points, and James Coffey, the freshman, notched nine.

The Ward Melville boys volleyball squad is on a hot streak with an undefeated record. The Patriots, the defending Long Island champions from last season, looked to put up another “W” when they hosted Westhampton, Thursday, Sept. 26.

Returning outside hitter, senior Kyle Fagan, had a potent one-two punch with a vicious serve, coupled with a dominating performance at the net, that provided the spark for the Patriot offense.

Ward Melville looked a little unsteady in the first set, but despite falling behind in the third set, they ended up sweeping the Hurricanes 25-21, 25-16 and 25-15, for the victory. The Patriots followed up with a 3-1 win at Connetquot, Sept. 28, and stand at 7-0 in Division I.

When the Ward Melville Patriots traveled to winless Central Islip, it was a different kind of basketball game. It was clear three minutes in that the Patriots would prevail, but head coach Alex Piccirillo pulled most of his starters and throttled the offensive pressure. Leading by 13 points at 17-4 after the first quarter, Ward Melville ran down the 35-second shot clock to single digits the rest of the way so as not to run up the score.

The Patriots easily closed out the game with a 46-26 victory in the Feb. 1 Division I matchup.

Neelesh Raghurama drained four triples and a field goal for 14 points and Devin Lynch added 10. Luke Kordic netted seven points, Logan Seta and Lorenzo Beaton banked four points apiece.

After beating visiting Longwood 54-51 Feb. 5, the Patriots (now 8-6 league) find themselves in fourth place with two games remaining before playoff season begins.
