It was a pitching duel in the Suffolk class A semi-final June 14 when Miller Place No. 2 hosted Islip No. 3 where the bats were muzzled most of the way that resulted in a scoreless game through seven innings. Miller Place pitcher Jessica Iavarone found herself in trouble in the top of the 8th of the extra inning game, when Islip loaded the bases with no outs.
If the threat of a possible season ending base hit rattled Iavarone she didn’t show it and appeared to throw harder under the pressure. The senior fanned the next three batters to retire the side unscathed.
When asked how she handled a possible season ending inning Iavarone said she felt little pressure. “Honestly what calms me is to just think that nobody’s on the field and there’s no one on base and to pitch how I know how to pitch”, the senior said. “I just threw as hard as I {could}.”
After a Julia Lent base hit, Madison Power laid down a perfect bunt moving Lent over to second and beat the throw to first. Amelia DeRosa stepped into the batter’s box who battled at the plate before the junior ripped a rope to straight away center for the game winning hit and was immediately mobbed at second base.
DeRosa described her game winning double this way, “I saw {the pitch} I hit it in the gap, I had a good feeling I felt confident who was on base,” the junior said. “I felt really good and the nerves just washed away.”
The Panthers are back home June 15 for a best of three game series against No. 5 Bayport. Game time is 4 p.m.

The Shoreham-Wading River Wildcats saw a three-goal lead evaporate just before the half and had to claw their way back from five unanswered goals by Bayport-Blue Point in the Class C semi-final round at home June 12.
Claw their way back they did, with just over 2 minutes remaining when Alec Gregorek scored his 5th goal of the game to tie the score at 10-10 forcing a four-minute overtime period. It was Bayport’s Gavin Locascio’s stick that put an end to the Wildcat’s season when he buried his shot two minutes into the overtime period for a 11-10 victory.
Shoreham-Wading River concludes their Covid-19 shortened 2021 campaign at 13-2.

The Eagles of Rocky Point had a six-goal cushion at the halftime break, but Kings Park came out strong early in the second half drawing within three goals two different times when the Eagles slammed the door to win the Division II matchup 19-13 at home, June 4.
Senior Kelly Logue topped the scoring chart for the Eagles with five goals. Lindsey Lucia followed with four, and seniors Kaleigh Wilgeroth and Emmarose Hansen both had hat tricks.
A pair of sophomores led the way for Kings Park with Jaxie Cestone and Anne McGovern scoring three goals each.
Rocky Point senior Jenika Cuocco had 12 saves at net.
The Eagles finish their regular COVID- shortened season at 11-3 to ready themselves for post season play which began Tuesday June 8. Rocky Point was scheduled to play Comsewogue June 9. Results were not available at press time. Kings Park concluded their 2021 contest at 7-6.

It was Avery Gennaro’s stick who broke the ice for the Eagles of Rocky Point in the quarterfinal field hockey playoff opener at home, where they squared off against East Hampton April 17.
Protecting a one goal lead 11 minutes into the 3rd quarter it was Reagan Lane who punched in the insurance goal on a penalty shot to put her team up by two. But the Bonacker’s wouldn’t go quietly when Malina Sarlo rocked the box for East Hampton with 11:02 left in regulation to erase Lane’s insurance goal.
A yellow card against the East Hampton coach 2 minutes later didn’t help East Hampton’s rally and the Eagles held on to win the opening round of the Class B title chase 2-1.
Jenika Cuocco had four saves in net as Lilia Schafer stopped 3 for the Bonacker’s.

The Port Jefferson girls’ volleyball team at (4-2) had their hands full when they hosted Mattituck (10-1) in a League VI matchup April 10. On paper the Tuckers should’ve made short work of the Royals but that’s not what happened. Mattituck edged the Royals in the opening set winning it 25-19 but the Royals rallied back in the second nipping Mattituck 26-24 to make it a new game. The Royals went toe-to-toe in the 3rd set forcing Mattituck to win it by two, 26-24. The Tuckers stretched their legs in the 4th set with a 25-19 victory to win the game 3-1.
The Royals win in the second set forced Mattituck to go beyond 3 sets for only the third time in this season.
The Royals had a busy weekend with a double header later in the day against Pierson-Bridgehampton then have a road game against Greenport the following day.
The win lifts the Tuckers to 11-1 while the Royals fall to 4-3 looking to secure a playoff berth when post-season begins April 19

The Port Jefferson Royals at 0-6 had their hands full looking for that elusive first win of the season on the road against the 5-1 Eagles of Rocky Point, but that first taste of victory wasn’t to be. Port Jeff fielded a short roster resulting in a 7 on 7 contest without the luxury of substitution. The Eagles rattled off four unanswered goals in the first half and peppered the scoreboard with four more in the second for an 8-0 shutout.
The win lifts the Eagles to 6-1 in Div II just beyond the half way point with 6 games remaining.

The Cougars of Centereach left no doubt who was in charge when they traveled to their crosstown rival Newfield, scoring five minutes in off a penalty kick by Centereach senior Nicole Fabris to take the early lead. Newfield struggled to keep the ball up field and found themselves defending their half of the field when Fabris struck again with a big push up the left side where her solo shot found the right corner for the insurance goal 12 minutes into the second half. Fabris wasn’t done when she buried another penalty kick with 13 minutes left in the game for which Newfield had no answer.
The win, their third in a row lifts the Cougars to 2-2-1 in league IV for third in the standings behind Smithtown West and West Islip. The loss drops the Wolverines to 0-4-1
Both teams are back in action March 25 where the Cougars host Bellport at 4:30 p.m. and Newfield has a home game against North Babylon searching for their first win of this early season. Game time is 4 o’clock.

Last season, which was a year-and-a-half ago, Mount Sinai dealt Shoreham-Wading River their only loss of the regular season and the Wildcats weren’t about to let that happen again, blanking the Mustangs 28-0 on the road March 19.
Senior Johnny Schwarz found the endzone on a 36-yard pass from senior quarterback Chris Visintin and punched in again from 8 yards out for a 14-0 lead. Visintin connected with Jake Wilson on a 10-yard pass play in the 3rd quarter and found Max Barone on a 22 yarder late in the game. Jake Ekert’s foot was perfect on the night splitting the uprights all four times.
The win lifts the Wildcats to 2-0 with 3 games remaining while Mount Sinai opens their season 0-1 after they were forced to postpone their season opener due to one or more players testing positive for COVID-19.
