Smithtown West Bulls

Smithtown West needed the win in order to stay ahead of crosstown rival Smithtown East for sole possession of second place in the League 3 standings, and the Bulls did that handily at home downing the Huntington Blue Devils, 55-38, on senior night Feb. 23. 

The Bulls have one game remaining against Copiague Feb. 25 and will need that win to make the post season which begins Feb 27. 

Patrick Burke, the 6’6” sophomore, sat atop the scoring chart for the Bulls with six field goals for 12 points. Tyler Anderson, a junior, banked nine; senior Jack Driscoll netted nine; and Luke Jimenez, a senior, added eight. With the win, Smithtown West improves to 4-1.

Huntington junior Max Rentsch led the Blue Devils in scoring with 14 points followed by teammate Chad Rowe who banked six. Adrian Brooks and Kevin Drake netted five points apiece. The loss drops the Blue Devils to 1-4 with two games remaining.

Battling for second place in the league, Smithtown West had the measure of Newfield at home, holding off the Wolverines late game surge to win it, 69-56, Jan. 11.

Matt Behrens led the way for the Bulls, hitting six field goals and four from the line for 16 points. Brandon Rivera netted four from the floor, a triple and a free throw along with teammate T.J. Smith who didn’t miss from long distance, draining four treys for 12 points apiece.

Newfield senior guard Colin Cassara went eight for eight from the charity stripe along with two triples and a pair of field goals for a team high 18 points.

The win lifts Smithtown West to 4-1, 11-2 overall, one game behind Northport who sits atop the League III leaderboard.

The loss drops Newfield to 2-3, 6-6 overall.

Both teams were back in action Jan. 14 when the Bulls hosted Half Hollow Hills East and Newfield hit the road to take on Huntington. Results were not available at press time.

 

Centereach boys soccer, now at 3-5 in the league, had their hands full when they took on Smithtown West. The Bulls sit atop the League III leaderboard at 8-1 after beating the Cougars, 3-0, Oct. 11.

Senior Andrew Agunzo broke the ice for the Bulls 11 minutes into the opening half with a goal to take the early lead. The Cougars struggled for shots on goal as Smithtown West dominated the second half when senior forward Trevor Harrison scored the insurance goal and scored again to seal the deal. Ryan Jenkins had five stops in goal for the Cougars.

The Cougars battled Huntington at home Oct. 16. Game results were not available at press time.

Smithtown West is back in action Oct. 18 when they hit the road, also against Huntington, with a 4 p.m. start.
