A trifecta of four or more goal performances propelled the Stony Brook women’s lacrosse team to victory on Feb. 23 over upstate rival UAlbany. The Seawolves defeated the Great Danes 16-10, improving to 3-0 for a third consecutive season.

Isabella Caporuscio continued her impressive start to the season, pacing the Stony Brook offense with six points on four goals and two assists. Riley McDonald made her presence felt on the offensive end, tallying a game-high five goals, including her first as a Seawolf. Charlotte Wilmoth had herself a day, also notching four goals for her third straight multi-goal game and second hat trick of the season.

Alexandra Fusco added a pair of goals and an assist, while Julia Fusco notched a goal and an assist for the first multi-point game of her collegiate career. Casey Colbert led Stony Brook with a game-high three assists.

The Seawolves’ offense feasted on woman-up and free-position opportunities, scoring seven woman-up goals and three free-position.

On the defensive end, the Seawolves caused three turnovers and scooped up 13 ground balls. In the circle, Caporuscio recorded a game and career-high 11 draw controls. In net, Francesca Viteritti recorded a career-best six saves in a full 60 minutes of play.

After Stony Brook scored the game’s opening goal, UAlbany rattled off four straight goals to take a 4-1 lead late into the first. The Seawolves promptly responded with a 4-0 run of its own to retake the lead in the second, jumpstarted and capped off by goals from Caporuscio.

Big-time play on both ends helped Stony Brook outscore the Great Danes 7-2 in the second quarter and give the Seawolves a 10-6 advantage heading into the half. Quick goals from McDonald and Alexandra Fusco gave Stony Brook a 12-6 lead early in the third. 

A 4-1 UAlbany run cut its deficit to 13-10 with 7:25 remaining in the fourth. Stony Brook immediately answered with goals from Wilmoth, Caporuscio, and McDonald to put things out of reach for the Great Danes.

Up next, the team will resume play on March 1, for its home opener against No. 10 Johns Hopkins. First draw is scheduled for noon and will stream live on FloCollege.

Despite a 27-point effort from CJ Luster II, Stony Brook fell to Charleston, 81-74, on Jan. 30 at TD Arena. The Seawolves raced out to a 15-point advantage but the Cougars’ hot-second half pushed them past Stony Brook in the nationally televised affair in South Carolina.

Stony Brook raced out to a 15-0 advantage, holding Charleston without a point over the opening 5:32.  The Seawolves connected on 7-of-11 from the floor to start the evening, while the Cougars missed on nine straight to begin the night. Stony Brook led 21-6 with 9:30 remaining in the opening stanza before Charleston ripped off eight straight points and held the Seawolves without a made field goal for more than four minutes. Luster stretched Stony Brook’s lead to double-digits again, 28-18, after connecting on his third trifecta of the first half with less than six minutes on the clock.

Charleston finished the final five minutes of the first half strong, whittling its deficit down to four points, 36-32, at the break. The Cougars scored the first nine points of the second half, turning the four-point deficit into a five-point advantage, their first lead of the evening.

Luster ended a Seawolves’ drought to start the second half by scoring 10 points over a span of three-plus minutes to even the contest at 48-48 with 13 minutes to play. The game of runs continued, seeing Charleston score 17 of the next 24 points to construct a 10-point lead, 65-55, as the clock ticked under eight minutes to play. Stony Brook battled back, trimming its deficit to two points, 68-66, with five minutes remaining.

The Cougars used a late 11-0 run to open up a 79-66 advantage and ultimately close out the come-from-behind victory over the Seawolves.

“Our guys did a great job putting us in position to win the game on the free throw line down two with five minutes to go. Charleston was able to get an offensive rebound and score and they spurted away from us late,” head coach Geno Ford noted. “I was happy with the aggressiveness and tenacity we showed for much of the night. We are playing better as of late and have a tough one on Saturday at UNC Wilmington.”

Up next, the team continues its swing through the south, facing UNC Wilmington on February 1. Tip-off is scheduled for 7 p.m. from Trask Coliseum, with the contest streaming on FloCollege.

The Stony Brook women’s basketball team (13-8, 7-3 CAA) was narrowly edged by Drexel (17-5, 9-2 CAA), 66-65, in a thriller at Island Federal Arena on Feb. 5. The Seawolves and Dragons battled back-and-forth down the stretch with the lead changing hands four times over the final 2:11 of the game.

Ultimately, Drexel took the final lead of the game with 27 seconds to play when graduate guard Keishana Washington connected on a jumper that put the Dragons ahead by what would be the final score, 66-65. Washington, the nation’s third leading scorer recorded 40 points en route to the win for the Dragons.

The Seawolves were paced by the trio of sophomore forward Sherese Pittman, graduate guard Daishai Almond, and junior guard Shamarla King who all scored in double figures. Pittman led Stony Brook as she recorded a near double-double with a team-high 19 points and nine rebounds.

Stony Brook used a big second quarter to take a 37-34 lead at the halftime break. The Seawolves outscored the Dragons, 22-15, in the second quarter and used a 12-2 run to close the frame. Pittman fueled Stony Brook over the first 20 minutes of the contest as she scored 15 of here 19 points and grabbed six rebounds in the first half.

The Seawolves locked in defensively in the third quarter as they limited Drexel to 10 points on 4-of-18 shooting (22.2%) and took a 49-44 lead into the fourth.

The final quarter of action featured a thrilling back-and-forth finish, with the Dragons coming away with the upper hand. With 2:11 to play senior guard Gigi Gonzalez drilled a jump shot to put the Seawolves out in front, 63-62.

After the Dragons and Seawolves traded possessions, Washington put Drexel back in the driver’s seat, 64-63, with 49 seconds to play. Pittman came through in the clutch for Stony Brook as she knocked down a pair of crucial free-throws with 31 seconds to go to put the Seawolves back up 65-64.   Washington’s final bucket with 27 seconds remaining in the game proved to be the game-winner.

Next up, the team hits the road for a mid-week matchup with Northeastern on Feb. 9 at 7 p.m. The meeting between the Seawolves and Huskies marks the first for the teams since December 6, 2008. Stony Brook is 5-5 all-time against Northeastern.
