Suffolk County Police Homicide Squad and Arson Section detectives are investigating a house fire that killed a man in Nesconset on Oct. 15.

Fourth Precinct officers responded to 2 Highland Place after a 911 caller reported a fire at 5:25 p.m. Thomas Walz, a resident of the home, was taken out of the house by first responders prior to police arrival.

Walz, 62, was transported via ambulance to Stony Brook University Hospital where he was pronounced dead. There were no other people in the house at the time of the fire and no other injuries reported.

The cause of the fire is under investigation but does not appear to be criminal at this time.

Suffolk County Police arrested a man on Oct. 13 for Grand Larceny and DWI after he stole an Uber driver’s vehicle in Commack.

An Uber driver left the motor running in his 2012 Honda Accord in the parking lot of 88 Veterans Memorial Highway as he was picking up a food order to be delivered, when a man got into the vehicle and drove away at approximately 8:55 p.m.

The vehicle crashed into a curb and a fire hydrant a short distance away. The man exited the vehicle and fled on foot into a heavily wooded area. A Canine Unit officer and his dog located the man lying down in the woods. He was placed under arrest.

Fourth Squad detectives charged Joseph Ellis, 45, who is undomiciled, with two counts of Grand Larceny 3rd Degree. Patrol Officers determined that Ellis was allegedly impaired and charged him with Driving While Intoxicated and nine outstanding warrants.

A man allegedly stole four pairs of shoes from Famous Footwear, located at 1770 Veterans Memorial Highway on September 14 at approximately 3 p.m. The merchandise was valued at approximately $120.

Suffolk County Crime Stoppers and Suffolk County Police Sixth Precinct Crime Section officers are seeking the public’s help to identify and locate two people who allegedly stole from a Farmingville store last month.

A man and a woman allegedly stole groceries from Stop & Shop, located at 2350 North Ocean Ave., at 11:30 a.m. on September 30. The merchandise was valued at approximately $405.

Update: Eryk McPherson, the bicyclist who was seriously injured in a motor vehicle crash in Central Islip
on October 13, died of his injuries on October 14.

Suffolk County Police have arrested a man for allegedly driving while ability impaired by drugs following a motor vehicle crash that seriously injured a bicyclist in Central Islip on Oct. 13.

Eryk McPherson was riding a bicycle westbound across Joshuas Path at Vanderbilt Avenue when he was struck by a 2012 Honda sedan traveling southbound on Joshuas Path at approximately 7:30 p.m.

McPherson, 19, of Brentwood, was transported to South Shore University Hospital in Bay Shore for treatment of serious injuries.

The driver of the Honda, David Alfaro, 21, of Central Islip, was arrested and charged with Driving While Ability Impaired by Drugs and Unlicensed Operation of a Motor Vehicle. He is being held overnight at the Third Precinct and will be arraigned at First District Court in Central Islip on October 14.

The vehicle was impounded for a safety check. Anyone with information is asked to call Major Case at 631-852-6555 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-220-TIPS.

Suffolk County Police Fourth Squad detectives are investigating after a motorcyclist was seriously injured in a Hauppauge crash on Oct. 13.

Taylor Judd was driving a 2017 Jeep Grand Cherokee northbound on Joshuas Path, near Stonehenge Lane, when he attempted to make a right-hand turn into a parking lot and was struck by a 2016 Yamaha
motorcycle attempting to go around the Jeep at 3:02 p.m.

The driver of the motorcycle, Peter Bueno, 33, of Brentwood, was transported to South Shore University Hospital in Bay Shore for treatment of serious physical injuries. Judd, 33, of Centereach, was not
injured.

Suffolk County Police Third Squad detectives are investigating a hit-and-run crash that seriously injured a pedestrian in Central Islip  on Oct. 12.

Hillary Day was walking on the westbound shoulder of the roadway in front of 31 W. Suffolk Ave. when she was struck by a westbound motor vehicle at approximately 9 p.m. The vehicle, believed to be a gold-colored sedan, continued traveling westbound without stopping.

Day, 66, of Central Islip, was transported to South Shore University Hospital in Bay Shore for treatment of serious injuries.

The Amount of Fentanyl Seized by the District Attorney’s Task Force Could Have Killed 3.5 Million People

Suffolk County District Attorney Raymond A. Tierney announced on Oct. 11 that Remon Gibson, 43, of Bellport, was indicted for Operating as a Major Trafficker, and other related charges, after law enforcement allegedly uncovered 33 pounds of illegal narcotics, including approximately 7 kilograms of fentanyl and 8 kilograms of cocaine in his home.

“The amount of deadly narcotics seized in this operation is staggering. There was enough Fentanyl here to kill every man, woman, and child on Long Island,” said District Attorney Tierney. “This case underscores our unwavering commitment to dismantling drug operations that threaten our communities.”

According to the investigation, on September 25, 2024, members of the Suffolk County Sheriff’s Office and Police Department, assigned to the District Attorney’s Fentanyl Task Force, executed a search warrant at 5 Sunburst Lane in Bellport. The search allegedly yielded approximately 7 kilograms of fentanyl, over 8 kilograms of cocaine in brick form, about half a kilogram of xylazine, and various types of drug paraphernalia. Additionally, authorities allegedly seized around $80,000 in cash, a drug ledger, and kilo presses, including one with plates used for bricks of fentanyl and cocaine, stamped “COVID 19.”

Notably, a large quantity of fentanyl was allegedly discovered on a nightstand in Gibson’s bedroom, adjacent to a room occupied by his two minor children. Cocaine was also allegedly found hidden in a trap behind a backyard shed.

  •   One count of Operating as a Major Trafficker, a Class A-I felony;
  •   Two counts of Criminal Possession of a Controlled Substance in the First Degree, Class

    A-I felonies;

  •   Two counts of Criminal Possession of a Controlled Substance in the Third Degree, Class

    B felonies;

  •   Three counts of the Criminally Using Drug Paraphernalia, Class A misdemeanors; and
  •   Two counts of Endangering Welfare of a Child, Class A misdemeanors.

    Justice Ambro ordered Gibson held on $200,000 cash, $800,000 bond or $2,000,000 partially secured bond during the pendency of the case. Gibson is due back in court on November 8, 2024, and faces a minimum of 15 years to life in prison if convicted on the top count. He is being represented by George Duncan, Esq.

    This case is being prosecuted by Assistant District Attorney Saam Jalayer of the Narcotics Bureau, and the investigation was conducted by Detective Damian Torres of the Suffolk County District Attorney’s Office Fentanyl Task Force.

Suffolk County Police Fourth Squad detectives are investigating a motor vehicle crash that seriously injured a motorcyclist in Commack on Oct. 11.

Aaron Hall was operating a 2006 Kawasaki motorcycle westbound on Jericho Turnpike when the motorcycle collided with an eastbound 2019 Nissan Rogue making a left turn onto Morewood Drive at approximately 5 p.m.

Hall, 25, of East Northport, was transported to Stony Brook University Hospital for treatment of serious injuries. The driver of the Nissan, Susan Rothstein, 59, of Commack, was transported to Stony Brook University Hospital for treatment of minor injuries.

Detectives are asking anyone with information on the crash to call the Fourth Squad at 631-854-8452.
