Wildcats Girls Basketball Edge Mustangs 43-36

After winning their preseason games handily over Southold/Greenport and Deer Park, Shoreham-Wading River girls basketball team dropped their league opener against John Glenn and the Wildcats looked to get back to their winning ways. Win they did against Mount Sinai, edging the Mustangs 43-36 on the road Dec. 6.

SWR senior Abby Korzewinski led the way for the Wildcats with 13 points. Sophomore guard Carlie Cutinella did her damage from down range hitting three triples, netting a total of nine points.
Mount Sinai sophomore standouts Casey Campo nailed four treys, four field goals and a free throw to lead the Mustangs 21 points, while Kylie Budke banked nine.

Shoreham-Wading River retakes the court Dec. 10 when they host Miller Place with a 4:15 p.m. start. Mount Sinai is back in action when they take on Amityville on the road Dec. 11. Tipoff is 4 p.m.

Bulls Boys Basketball Bests Blue Devils

Huntington’s boys basketball team trailed by two after the first eight minutes of play but then the Bulls of Smithtown East dropped the hammer and outscored the Blue Devils by 28 points to put the game away 66-36 in a non-league matchup at home, Dec. 5. Zac Chandler had the hot hand for Smithtown East draining four triples, three field goals andthree3 points from the line to lead his team with 21 points. Jared Borner followed with 12 points and Nick Lardaro added 11.

Huntington seniors Omari Stephen and Daniel Danziger topped the scoring chart for the Blue Devils with 10 points apiece. Huntington has another non-league game at Cold Spring Harbor Dec. 10 before they open league Dec. 12 when they host Harbor Hills East. Game time is 5:45 p.m.

Smithtown East will host Roslyn Dec. 7 at 10 a.m. before their league opener Dec. 12 at home against East Islip. Tipoff is 4 p.m.

Wildcats Pummel Seaford 49-7 in LIC

The Wildcats of Shoreham-Wading River’s football team have been sprinting towards success for the past six years, and now this year’s Long Island Championship adds another tally to their streak.

SWR senior quarterback Xavier Arline did what he’s done all season long leading his team to victory where the Wildcats pummeled Seaford 49-7 in the D-IV championship game at Hofstra University’s James M. Shuart Stadium Nov. 30.

Arline ran for four touchdowns in the game with carries of six yards, 54 yards, 64 yards and 67 yards, while throwing a pair of touchdown passes to tight-end Jake Wilson and senior running-back Mike Casazza. Seaford managed to find the end-zone with 29 seconds left as the Wildcats claimed their 4th Long Island Championship trophy in six years.

Rocky Point Eagles Basketball Best Cougars 56-41

Rocky Point struck first and often in their 2nd non-league game of the pre-season against visiting Centereach, besting the Cougars 56-41 at home Nov. 29. The Eagles hit the road for another non-League contest against Comsewogue Dec. 4 with a 5:45 p.m. start, before their home opening league debut against Hauppauge Dec. 6. Game time is 6 p.m.

Centereach will play Ward Melville at home Dec. 3 and travel to Commack two days later for a pair of non-league starts, with both game tip off at 5:45 p.m. They will conclude its pre-season when it travels to Sachem East Dec. 10 for a 6:15 p.m. start. League play for the Cougars begins on Dec. 17 with their home opener against Smithtown West. Game time is 6 p.m.

Wildcats Win Div. IV Suffolk County Championship

Shoreham-Wading River looked to avenge their only loss of the season back in week five to the Mustangs of Mount Sinai in the Suffolk County D-IV championship game Nov. 24. Avenge it they did, handing Mount Sinai their first and only loss of their season in a 35-14 victory at Stony Brook’s Kenneth P. LaValle Stadium to punch their way into the Long Island Championship round.

Despite leading 14-13 with two minutes left in the opening half an unsportsmanlike penalty extinguished the Mustang drive, and it was all SWR in the 2^nd half with Xavier Arline leading the way with 26 carries covering 195 yards.

It was the Wildcats fifth Suffolk County title, and the team will face Seaford Nov. 30 at Hofstra University at 12 p.m. for the Long Island crown.

Ward Melville Patriots Football Season Ends

Trailing by 11, Ward Melville’s Steven Germain shifted the momentum for the Patriots with an 85-yard kickoff return for a touchdown on the road followed by a 2-point conversion to trail 21-17 at the half against Patchogue-Medford.

Pat-Med came out firing in the third quarter and out-paced the Patriots to put the game away, 35-23, in the opening round of postseason play Nov. 9.

Ward Melville sophomore quarterback Chris Prussen opened the scoring on a short yardage touchdown. Tommy Dellaporta’s field goal found its mark from 39 yards, and senior wide receiver Travis Moehringer on a 19-yard pass play found the end zone for six.

The Patriots finished their season on the road with a 4-5 record as the No. 5 seed in Division I.

Ward Melville Patriots Eliminated in Semis

With 14 minutes, 9 seconds left in the second half, Sachem East the No. 1 seed broke the ice with a goal to take a 1-0 lead in the field hockey Class A semifinal round against No. 5 Ward Melville.

Despite a late game offensive surge, the visiting Patriots fell short Oct. 30. Ward Melville concludes its season with a Division I record of 12-5, 13-5 overall.

Jaedyn Scarlotos led her team in scoring with 23 points consisting of 15 goals and eight assists, placing her third on the Suffolk County leaderboard. Teammate Amanda Lee had 10 assists and seven goals, notching 17 points, ranking her 14th in the county.

Wildcats Boys Soccer Falls in Overtime in Quarterfinal

The Wildcats of Shoreham-Wading River struck first when Matteo Sweet found the net six minutes into the 2^ndhalf to take a 1-0 lead over visiting Hauppauge in the Suffolk Class A soccer quarterfinal. The anticipation grew as the Wildcats held that lead with less than two minutes left in regulation, but the Eagles evened the game at the 1:17 mark off the foot of Aidan Augeri forcingthe sudden death overtime period. The Wildcat’s season ended eight minutes in, when Hauppauge’s Tim Hug scored the game winner for the 2-1 victory.

Shoreham-Wading River concluded their season with an impressive 13-4 record, with senior Brady Cummings concluding his varsity soccer career ranked 4th in Suffolk County with 25 goals and five assists. Teammate James Rose made Suffolk’s top 25 scoring leaders, with 13 goals and six assists.

Patriots Win 3-1 to Advance in Suffolk AA Playoffs

The Ward Melville Patriots girls volleyball team advanced to the next round of Class AA playoffs after defeating Centereach on Oct. 28. The Patriots won the first two sets of the match but the Cougars rallied from a nine-point deficit in the third set to win 25-21. Ward Melville, then went on to take the fourth set to secure overall victory. the Patriots next match will be against Bay Shore Nov. 1 at 4 p.m.

Comsewogue Warriors Fall to East Islip 21-7

At 3-3 in their division, Comsewogue’s varsity football team needed a road win against East Islip when Jaden Martinez punched in from six yards out for a Warrior touch down on their opening drive in the final quarter, and with the point after tied the game at 7-7. With 10:49 left in regulation East Islip scored two unanswered touchdowns for which the Warriors had no answer, to win the game 21-7 in a Div. III matchup Oct. 26.

The loss drops Comsewogue to 3-4 forcing a must win game when the Warriors travel to Miller Place Nov. 1 in their final game of the regular season. Kickoff is at 6 p.m.
