The Ward Melville Patriots girls volleyball team advanced to the next round of Class AA playoffs after defeating Centereach on Oct. 28. The Patriots won the first two sets of the match but the Cougars rallied from a nine-point deficit in the third set to win 25-21. Ward Melville, then went on to take the fourth set to secure overall victory. the Patriots next match will be against Bay Shore Nov. 1 at 4 p.m.
At 3-3 in their division, Comsewogue’s varsity football team needed a road win against East Islip when Jaden Martinez punched in from six yards out for a Warrior touch down on their opening drive in the final quarter, and with the point after tied the game at 7-7. With 10:49 left in regulation East Islip scored two unanswered touchdowns for which the Warriors had no answer, to win the game 21-7 in a Div. III matchup Oct. 26.
The loss drops Comsewogue to 3-4 forcing a must win game when the Warriors travel to Miller Place Nov. 1 in their final game of the regular season. Kickoff is at 6 p.m.
It was all Harborfields in a Division II road game against Mount Sinai where the Tornadoes blew through the Mustangs, 5-0, Oct. 22.
The juniors led the way for Harborfields when Katie Davis scored twice along with Kathryn Morgan and Taylor Sammis who both stretched the net. Ruby Sember, the freshman, also put one through to round out the scoring for the Tornadoes with one game remaining before postseason play.
Harborfields senior keeper Zoe Krief had three saves in net and teammate Kristina Hansen a freshman stopped two. Hailey Covington had eight saves for the Mustangs and teammate Alaina Riley stopped four.
Mount Sinai concludes their regular season with a senior night home game against West Babylon Oct. 24 in a must-win game for any hopes of postseason play. Game time is 6 p.m.
Harborfields also concludes their regular season needing a win on the road against Bayport-Blue Point Oct. 24, with a 4:30 p.m. start.
It was the youth of the Comsewogue soccer team that delivered a gift to the senior class when freshman Angelina Ortiz retied the game at 1-1 late in the first half and delivered the go-ahead goal four minutes into the second against visiting Riverhead, senior night Oct. 21. The Blue Waves rallied back when Megan McIntosh stretched the net twice, but the Warrior’s own Gianna Gritzmacher and Alyse Then both scored for the Warriors to win the game 4-2.
The Warriors are on a roll with their winning ways notching their 6th victory in a row, concluding their regular season at 8-5-1 in Division I.
Comsewogue is solidly positioned for the post season with their opening playoff game Oct. 28 at 2:00 p.m. Details on who and where they play was not available by press time.
The Bay Shore Marauders field hockey team’s defense pressured the Patriots from the opening play, shutting down the otherwise potent Ward Melville offense, 1-0, Oct. 17.
Ward Melville’s Isabella Ospitale made four saves on the day at the home game.
The Patriots drop to 10-4 sliding into fifth place in Division I squandering a first-round bye and instead hosted Comsewogue, the 12 seed, at home Oct. 23. Results were not available at press time.
Centereach boys soccer, now at 3-5 in the league, had their hands full when they took on Smithtown West. The Bulls sit atop the League III leaderboard at 8-1 after beating the Cougars, 3-0, Oct. 11.
Senior Andrew Agunzo broke the ice for the Bulls 11 minutes into the opening half with a goal to take the early lead. The Cougars struggled for shots on goal as Smithtown West dominated the second half when senior forward Trevor Harrison scored the insurance goal and scored again to seal the deal. Ryan Jenkins had five stops in goal for the Cougars.
The Cougars battled Huntington at home Oct. 16. Game results were not available at press time.
Smithtown West is back in action Oct. 18 when they hit the road, also against Huntington, with a 4 p.m. start.
Junior forward Summer Agostino broke the ice for the Ward Melville Patriots girls soccer team 21 minutes in, off an assist from Kate Ancona for a 1-0 lead against visiting Lindenhurst Oct. 10. Midway through the second half Jessica Tampori fed the ball to Katie Cosenza whose shot found its mark for the insurance goal as the Patriots blanked the Bulldogs, 2-0. Freshman goalie Elyse Munoz had three saves in net.
The Oct. 10 win lifted the Patriots to 7-3 in Division I. Ward Melville took to the field again when they hit the road Oct. 16 to take on Centereach. Results were not available at press time.

Usually the football team schedules its homecoming game against a lower seeded team to increase the likelihood of victory, but not Shoreham-Wading River. At 4-0 the Wildcats hosted the other Division IV powerhouse Oct. 12, the Mount Sinai Mustangs, also at 4-0. It was the battle of the unbeaten, but the Mustangs scored the first two touchdowns and never looked back out pacing the Wildcats, 35-21, for the division’s top spot.
Senior running back Matthew LoMonaco led the way for the Mustangs first with a pick-6, a 62-yard reception for the score and a short yardage catch for his third touchdown of the game. Derek Takacs hauled in a 31-yard pass for the score, and Joseph Spallina punched in from short yardage. Senior kicker Joseph Balzano was perfect on the day splitting the uprights all five times.
Shoreham-Wading River quarterback Xavier Arline did what he’s done all season scoring on a pair of rushing touchdowns, and teammate Max Barone, the sophomore, caught a 7-yard pass from Arline for the score.

The Mustangs stand alone atop the Division IV leaderboard 5-0 while the Wildcats dip to 4-1.
Next up for the Mustangs is a road game Oct. 18 against Southampton/Pierson/Bridgehampton with a 6:30 p.m. kickoff.
The Wildcats look to get back to their winning ways at home Oct. 19 at 2 p.m. for their senior game.
The Comsewogue field hockey team’s game Oct. 12 was scoreless after 60 minutes of regulation, forcing the Warriors into a shootout against the visiting Blue Devils of Huntington. Lauren LoScalzo and teammate Anna Wickey settled it for the Blue Devils besting the Warriors 2-1 in the shootout to snatch the victory.
The win lifts Huntington to 5-7 in league with two games remaining before post season play begins.
Comsewogue drops to 4-7 and are back in action Oct. 15 on the road against Lindenhurst before their final game of the regular season at home two days later on senior night. Game time is 6 p.m.
Huntington set themselves up against Sachem East Oct. 15 at home game time at 4 p.m. They will be back at it hosting Riverhead Oct. 17 with game time set for 4 p.m.
Leading the way for the Wildcats’ golf team was senior co-captain Gavin Melandro, a six-year varsity veteran and four-year All-League player, who lived up to his No. 1 position on the team winning his match by shooting a 43 against Longwood at Spring Lake Golf Club, Middle Island, Oct. 8. Kevin Beagan, a senior and co-captain of the team, shined from the No. 6 position defeating his opponent by three strokes. Andrew Vignola, who according to coach Rich Muller is the most consistent player, shot a 48 and is vying for a spot on the final six-man roster for postseason tournament play. Freshman Timmy Manzello, the No. 1 player for the JV squad, made his varsity debut in exhibition play. Muller said he deserved to be brought up, adding that Manzello shot a respectable 56.
Longwood beat Shoreham-Wading River 7-2.
The Wildcats are back on the links Oct. 11 at Great Rock Golf Club in Wading River where they’ll take on Mount Sinai at 4 p.m. to conclude their regular season.
“I hope to have as many individuals qualify for the county tournament by playing well at leagues and having the team qualify would be special,” Muller said. “I have high expectations for my top three: Gavin Melandro, Tristan Costello, who didn’t play today, and Andrew Vignola to make the county’s. Depending on conditions, and what player shows up, we should do well.”
