This week’s featured shelter pet is Alabama, a brown and white tabby cat currently up for adoption at the Smithtown Animal Shelter.
Estimated to be around 5 years old, she was found in a vehicle wheel well and was dropped off at the shelter in May.
This girl is not afraid to demand your attention, and is a ball of constant affection and motion.She is the cat that does figure 8’s around your ankles and chirps for attention 24/7. She is a gentle and friendly cat that would make anyone lucky.
This beauty has elevated 3rd eyelids that do not require medication and seem to not cause her any issue. She is unsure around other cats as they tend to bully her, but will likely be able to live amicably with feline friends.

This week’s featured shelter pet trio are Hoyt, King Charles and Chanticleer, three roosters up for adoption at the Smithtown Animal Shelter.
The boom in chicken ownership the past few years has created a problem for the males. Roosters are often a source of complaint for neighbors and prohibited in some areas. When an accidental boy is hatched, they often find themselves kicked out of the flock because placement for roosters is getting increasingly harder to find.
Hoyt, King Charles, and Chanticleer were all abandoned as strays to fend for themselves. Each is a young fellow, with Charles being the oldest at just over a year old. These boys were all found emaciated, dehydrated and weak. They are all now happy and healthy, but are lonely and looking for a flock of their own.
King Charles (formerly Prince Charles) is a handsome rooster who has been at the Animal Shelter for a year. He is docile and easygoing, and seeks out physical closeness with any animal he can find. Charles enjoys eating blueberries and tomatoes.
Chanticleer has been with at the shelter for a short time, and he has shown to be an active guy that is slow to trust people. He has yet to decide what his favorite treats are, though he seems to like tomatoes. Chanticleer can have a spicy attitude, but will learn to be better as he settles in.
Hoyt is the shelter’s newest addition and is proving to be docile and friendly with a love for corn and other animals. Hoyt has some weight to gain, but is making great progress.
All three of them enjoy crowing the day away. They’ve been through a lot in their short lives, and they need a safe and nurturing environment that will help them flourish.

However, if an animal is in danger and needs housing temporarily until another rescue has room, they will do their best to provide safe shelter while they can. While the animal waits for space to open in another rescue, it will be available for adoption through our Adoption Center.

Zendaya needs a very special home because she has Feline Leukemia. This disease is only a danger to other cats so she will need to be the only cat or live with other afflicted or vaccinated housemates.She deserves a loving home that will make the best out of every minute! Leukemia positive cats are heartbreakers, it is not their fault that they have the disease, yet they are hard to adopt because the have a shorter life expectancy.We know that there is a hero out there willing to love her for the rest of her life…will it be you?

This sweet girl was picked up as a stray by an animal control officer and brought to the Brookhaven Animal Shelter. Sadly, no one has come forward to claim her so she’s ready for a new start in a loving home.
Orchard is estimated to be between 6 to 8 years old and weighs approximately 55 pounds. She’s housebroken, crate trained, and knows some impressive commands like sit, down, stay, and paw but would like to be in a home with no cats.
Orchard is an absolute sweetheart who loves wiggling her way into your heart. She’s happiest when she’s by your side or curled up at your feet. Her gentle and affectionate nature makes her the perfect companion.

These sweet siblings were abandoned in cat carriers on the side of the Long Island Expressway on June 26. Rescuers brought these two young girls, estimated to be 1 1/2 years old, to the Smithtown Animal Shelter where they needed a little time to adjust. Now they are little balls of affection and love and are ready for their furever home. The shelter staff hopes to have them adopted together. 631-360-7575

Free rabies clinic
The Town of Brookhaven Animal Shelter and Adoption Center, 300 Horseblock Road, Brookhaven will hold a free Rabies Clinic on Saturday, July 29 from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. The clinic is open to all Town residents and offers free rabies vaccinations for all dogs, cats and ferrets and free cat/dog FVRCP or DAPPCV vaccine. This week’s shelter pet is Mia, a four-year-old pit bull mix who came to the Smithtown Animal Shelter in 2020 after she was hit by a car (minor fractures in her no foot and some scrapes). Despite being scared and injured, she started bonding with the staff immediately.
Mia is a volunteer favorite as she is equal parts goofball and cuddle buddy. She can entertain herself for hours with any toy, loves going for walks and enjoys being snuggled on the couch. Mia does wish to be your only pet and she has “stranger danger”, meaning she needs proper introductions to new people. Once she has gotten to know someone, they are her friend for life.

This week’s featured shelter pet isChevy, a two year-old male Pit Mix who had a very difficult start to his young life. It’s hard to imagine that this happy pup was once found on the side of the road, broken and beaten this past New Year’s Eve. Thanks to the kind hearted nature of law enforcement at the Suffolk County Police Department, a truly devoted team at Animal Surgical Center, one saintly foster family, and the selfless team at the Smithtown Animal Shelter, Chevy is thriving, back to good health, and awaiting his furrever home. Since his recovery, Chevy has become quite a celebrity, making appearances in viral TikToks, and getting profiled by News 12 and Newsday. Chevy loves to listen to music, especially Andrea Bocelli, earning him the nickname Bocelli, or Bo for short.
Chevy is finally getting to experience the happy puppy life that he never had before. He has gained back weight, is strong and mobile despite still having a slight limp, and loves to snuggle and kiss. Even though he was mistreated by humans before, he is still very trusting and friendly to all new people. He gets along with some dogs and has lived in a multi-pet home for the period of his recovery. Chevy is the perfect example of the ultimate comeback story, and he won’t let anything get him down.
Chevy will only be adopted into the best of homes who will provide him with the love and care he was missing in his past life. Due to his limited vision, he should only be with older kids that will respect his sight trouble. He also has a well-managed food allergy. He needs a family that is fully committed to the promise that Chevy will never know another bad day again. Chevy can’t wait to find his perfect furrever home, and we know that home is out there somewhere for him.

This week’s featured shelter pet is Ufee, a fourteen year-old Male Pomeranian Mix who was abandoned at a park and is now up for adoption at the Smithtown Animal Shelter.
Don’t let his age fool you, he looks and acts just like a young pup! Ufee is a happy and friendly guy who enjoys spending time around people. He is an absolutely beautiful dog who is very gentle and kind. Ufee has a slightly under active thyroid and some limited hearing. He also has some halitosis, but the Animal Shelter is working on taking care of this. Ufee would do well in a home with other pets and with children over the age of ten. He is ready to share his love with a lucky family, and we know that perfect home is out there somewhere for him.

Santiago is very unsure around other animals; with proper introductions he will likely do well with other pets. He does like to lift his leg, so belly bands may be needed in the beginning. He also is just learning what it means to be walked on a leash but he is a quick learner and a happy soul that any family would be lucky to have.

This week’s featured shelter pet is Ratatouille, a five year-old female domestic shorthair mix up for adoption at the Smithtown Animal Shelter.
A total cuddle bug, Ratatouille loves people, and is a big fan of getting her head scratched. She is super sweet, affectionate, and friendly. She has a reactive skin condition called Eosinophilic Granuloma that causes her to have some itchy and discomforting lesions on her lip and her side. Fortunately, these lesions are not contagious to other animals, but they do require steroid treatment from time to time.
Ratatouille is ready for her new home, and we know that perfect home is out there somewhere for her.
