SWR Wildcats too much for Center Moriches

Center Moriches sputtered against the swarming defense of Shoreham-Wading River during a non-league basketball game on Monday, Nov. 28.

The Wildcats took a 14-point lead by halftime. Seniors Sophie Costello topped the scoring chart for the Wildcats with 17 points, GraceAnn Leonard banked 13 and Colleen Ohrtman netted 8 in the 50-31 home victory.

The Wildcats notched their second win in as many games with three more non-league contests to go. They’ll face Sachem East, Newfield and William Floyd before league play begins.

The Wildcats open their league season on Tuesday, Dec. 13, when they host Hampton Bays at 4:30 p.m.

Kings Park Kingsmen rain on Shoreham-Wading River Wildcats’ homecoming parade

Leading 27-15 after three quarters of play, the Shoreham-Wading River Wildcats looked for a win in their homecoming football game on Saturday, Oct. 15, against Kings Park, but the Kingsmen had other ideas.

Kings Park quarterback Kyles Weeks was the offensive spark in the final 12 minutes of play, orchestrating a 29-point fourth quarter explosion that rained on the Wildcats homecoming parade to win it, 44-33.

Weeks hit wide receiver Declan O’Melia on an 89-yard pass play for the score with 7:22 left in regulation. Then, Weeks, on a keeper, punched his way in for the score to retake the lead with four minutes left.

Shoreham Wading River quarterback Dylan Zahn answered with a touchdown strike to Liam Kershis. With Sam Palmer’s foot, the Wildcats retook the lead, 33-30, with two minutes left.

From there it was all Weeks, who aired one out for a 40-yard pass completion, then found the endzone on a keeper where the Kingsmen edged ahead, 37-33.

A Kings Park cornerback then intercepted a Wildcat pass and ran it back 56 yards for the score, and Alex Squillacioti’s successful point after attempt put the Kingsmen out front 44-33 for the final score of the game.

Zahn threw for three touchdowns and rushed for another, and sophomore cornerback Michael Casey had two interceptions for the Wildcats.

The win lifts Kings Park to 5-1 in the division, and the loss drops the Wildcats to 3-3 with one game remaining before postseason play begins.

Shoreham-Wading River retakes the field Friday, Oct. 21, in their final game of the regular season where they’ll host Mount Sinai in a must-win game. Kickoff is 6 p.m.

Kings Park will also be back in action Friday, Oct. 21, solidly positioned in the playoff picture, and will host Babylon. Game time is slated for 6:30 p.m.

Mount Sinai wins over SWR in the Suffolk Class C final

It was all Mt. Sinai in the Suffolk Class C final where the No. 1 seeded Mustangs led by eight goals at the half over No. 2 seed Shoreham-Wading River and never let up to capture the County title 16-5.

Joey Spallina reached a milestone in the win, scoring a goal to eclipse the Long Island high school record of 501 points, a combination of goals and assists, in the victory May 31 at East Islip High School.

Sophomore attack Lucas Laforge topped the scoring chart for the Mustangs with six goals and one assist and Joey Spallina had five assists and three goals for eight points. Brayden Wilcken had 11 saves in net.

The win sends the Mustangs to the Long Island Championship round at Hofstra University Saturday June 4th. Game time is 5:30 p.m.

Vandermeulen HS hosts Steeplefest invitational

The Port Jefferson Steeplefest invitational took place on Saturday, April 9, at the Earl L. Vandermeulen High School, attracting schools from all over Suffolk County.

Mt. Sinai senior Kate Del Gandio won the girls 100-meter hurdle event with a time of 14.68. Senior Hugo Onghai placed first for Port Jeff in the boys 100-meter hurdles, clocking in at 16.36. In the 2000-meter steeplechase Frosh finals, Shoreham-Wading River’s Anna Minetti finished first with a time of 8:20.82. In the Frosh boys Steeplechase, Patrick Shea of Shoreham-Wading River clocked in at 7:07.36. Del Gandio also placed first in the 100-meter dash with a time of 12.56. Mt. Sinai senior Kyra Franks took the top spot in the 200-meter dash event, besting the field with a 26.09. Port Jeff senior Annie Maier took top honors in the long jump event by traveling 15-11.50. Mt. Sinai’s Kelly Hughes and Casey Campo placed second and third respectively. Julia Sue-Kim-Ling of Smithtown East proved she was the class of the field in the triple jump when she leapt 34-5.25. Kings Park senior Emily Stritzl also placed first in the pole-vault event, clearing 8-0.

Shoreham-Wading River Wildcats stave off Bulls

Although the Wildcats of Shoreham-Wading River never trailed, they had their hands full holding off the Bulls of Smithtown West in a Division-II matchup at home at the Thomas Cutinella Memorial Field. Trading goals most of the way the Wildcats edged the Bulls, 11-9, April 2.

Senior midfielder Fransisco Cortes led the way for the Wildcats with four goals and three assists, and teammate Alec Gregorek netted four goals and one assist. Alec’s younger brother Liam Gregorek scored as did Tommy Palumbo and Steven Cain.

Smithtown West junior Will Fitzsimmons had two goals and two assists, Owen Ellick had an assist and three goals, and Ryan Trebing netted three.

The win lifts Shoreham-Wading River to 2-0 in the early going and Smithtown West is 1-1, 3-1 overall.

Both teams retake the field April 5 when the Wildcats hit the road with a game against Harborfields as Smithtown West travels to West Babylon. Both games face off at 5 p.m.

SWR students commemorate women in history

Albert G. Prodell Middle School seventh grade students in the Shoreham-Wading River School District are commemorating Women’s History Month with their studies and a paper quilt that was created to showcase the dynamic and powerful contributions of many women in history.

The project was spearheaded by social studies teacher Corinne Fallon, who is a member of the Women’s History Month committee.

The quilt features black and white cutouts and short profiles of Clara Barton, Amelia Earhart, Anne Frank, Frida Kahlo, Helen Keller, Rosa Parks, Sonia Sotomayor and others. It is a tribute to and reminder of the vital role that they play in America’s past, present and future.

100 days smarter in Shoreham-Wading River

How many opportunities are there to celebrate the number 100? Miller Avenue School staff and students celebrated the 100th day of school with STEM projects galore, dressing as if they were 100 years old, having a 100th Day Parade and so much more.

Science, art, technology and, of course, math skills were used throughout the building to celebrate this exciting milestone.

Students in Vicki Radonavitch’s kindergarten class used their growing imaginations to build whatever their engineering skills would allow out of 100 different manipulatives. Cara Behrens and Janelle Belotti’s first grade students built with 100 cups, Legos, pattern blocks and snapping cubes. They also organized stickers and fruit loops into 10s to make necklaces.

“We had so much fun,” Ms. Behrens said. “It was an exciting day with the students collaborating together to work as a team and develop their interpersonal skills.”

Other classes completed various center activities throughout the day, incorporating the number 100 and signifying the successful move forward in the academic year.

SWR Wildcats win against Islip

With the score tied at 42-42 with :09 seconds left in regulation Sophie Costello drove the lane for the Wildcats scoring two as she fell to the floor with :06 seconds left.

The Wildcats sank one more from the free throw line as time expired to win 45-42 in the quarter-final playoff game at home against Islip Feb. 15.

Costello led her team in scoring with 19, GraceAnn Leonard netted 12 and Mia Rosati banked 8.

The Wildcats the class A3 seed will travel to West Babylon the A2 seed for the semi-final round Feb. 18. Game time is scheduled for 5:00 p.m.

Wildcats fall in league VI matchup

Bayport-Blue Point at 6-2 was too much for Shoreham-Wading River where the Wildcats fell 62-32 in a league VI matchup Jan. 28. Senior Liam Leonard’s pair of three pointers and Joey Marchese’s three field goals led the Wildcats with six points apiece, Aidan Clifford followed with five and Joey Marchese netted four. The Wildcats retake the court with a road game at Mt. Sinai Feb 3 with tip-off scheduled for 6:30 p.m.

Wildcats over-power Glenn

It was Shoreham-Wading River’s defense and GraceAnn Leonard’s 25 points that led the Wildcats to a 59-42 win at home against John Glenn in a league VI matchup Jan. 14.

Glenn trailed by six at the half but the Wildcats found their rhythm in the 3rd and stretched their legs in the final 8 minutes of play to put the game away.

Leonard scored 12 field goals and a free throw, teammates Sophie Costello scored 7 from the floor a triple and two from the line for 19 points and Sophia Lavey banked 6.

Carlie Cutinella netted 5 and Colleen Ohrtman and Katie Coster had two points apiece.

The win lifts the Wildcats 5-1 in league for sole possession of 2nd place one game behind Mount Sinai.
