In an effort to ease the suffering of all those subject to the devastation and terror being inflicted upon the Ukrainian nation, Senator Mario R. Mattera (2nd Senate District) and his staff will be hosting a humanitarian supply drive on Saturday, March 26th, from 10 a.m. to noon in their district office located at 180 East Main Street in Smithtown.

The effort is intended to assist all in the region including animals who were displaced when their families evacuated.

Senator Mattera’s office is coordinating this effort with the staff and students of Kings Park Central School District (KPCSD) and local nonprofit Nobody Starves on Long Island.

To assist families of Ukraine, KPCSD is collecting items that will be shipped overseas to assist the citizens of Ukraine.  The KPCSD drive will accept a host of items including medical items (including bandages, gauze and medicine), empty boxes, flashlights, batteries, garbage bags and personal items including warm clothing, boots, socks, tooth care, personal cleaning supplies and feminine hygiene products.

KPCSD will deliver all items to The Monastery of Saint Josaphat in Glen Cove for delivery to those in need in the region.

To assist Ukrainian pets in need, Nobody Starves on Long Island will be accepting pet supplies to help animals that in many cases have lost their owners and their homes.  To help the nonprofit, Senator Mattera’s office is accepting pet items such as pet food, leashes, food bowls, treats and collars.

The office will not be accepting cash donations at the event or in their office.

“We are hopeful that everyone in our community will join us in helping all who have been impacted by the attack on the Ukrainian people.  This unwarranted assault on their homes must be countered by the kindness of our community and I thank everyone who will or who has helped in this effort.  Thank you to Nobody Starves on Long Island and everyone at the Kings Park School District for their selfless work.  Together, we can bring hope to those who are suffering,” stated Senator Mattera.

To help families throughout our region enjoy a Happy Holiday season, Senator Mario R. Mattera (2nd Senate District) will be hosting a very special Holiday Toy Drive on Saturday, December 11th.  The special event will be from 11 am to 2 pm at the Frank O. Arthur Brush Barn in Smithtown, which is located at 245 Middle Country Road.

During the event, Senator Mattera and his staff, along with volunteers, will be accepting new and unwrapped toys and gift cards for children aged 2 through 16.  They request that donors avoid any toy guns or knives.

Senator Mattera and his staff will be on hand at this special event to say thank you to all who take the time to donate.

Senator Mattera’s office will deliver all donated gift cards and toys to the youngsters receiving care at Stony Brook University Children’s Hospital and for children who utilize the Salvation Army.

“The holidays are so special to our families and our community and it is so important that everyone gets to feel the warmth of this special season.  This year, as we reconnect with our families, I invite all of our residents to join me to make the  holidays a little more enjoyable for all,” stated Senator Mattera.  “We hope that everyone who is able will bring a toy or gift card to enjoy the gift of giving.”

There will be cookies and hot chocolate for the children who participate and each child who donates is invited to send a personalized letter to Santa!

Any resident who would like to donate but is unable to do so on Saturday, December 11th is invited to drop off their donation at Senator Mattera’s district office in Smithtown.  The office is located at 180 Middle Country Road, Suite 210.

Senator Mario R. Mattera (2nd Senate District), in cooperation with the Middle Country Public Library, is hosting the Stony Brook Cancer Center’s Mobile Mammography Van at the library’s Selden location.  This no-cost breast cancer-screening event will be held from 9 am to 4 pm on Monday, December 6th at the library, which is located at 575 Middle Country Road.

Stony Brook University Cancer Center operates and staffs the mobile van, which is supported by more than $3 million in funding from the New York State Department of Health.  The van provides convenient access to screening services for all women in our area to ensure they get the information and services needed to protect themselves from breast cancer.

This event is for women 40 and older who have not had a mammogram in the past year. To help ensure proper coordination of the event, residents are being asked to schedule an appointment by calling 631-638-4135.

According to information provided by Stony Brook Cancer Center, most screenings are no cost to the patient since the cost of mammograms are covered by most insurance plans.  Any resident without insurance will be referred to the New York State Cancer Services Program.

“Thank you to the Stony Brook Cancer Center and the Middle Country Public Library for taking part in this important event.  Hopefully, this will help residents who may face challenges that prevent them from accessing this very important regular screening get the information they need to protect their health.  Early detection is the most critical protection in the fight against breast cancer and I hope everyone who needs this service will join us on December 6th,” stated Senator Mattera.

Senator Mario R. Mattera (2nd Senate District), Assemblyman Doug Smith (5th Assembly District) and Suffolk County Legislator Nick Caracappa (4th Legislative District) are joining together to host a special Long Island Job Fair to help bring job seekers and employers who have openings together.

The event will be held at Suffolk County Community College (SCCC) on Friday, November 19th, from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Babylon Center located at 533 College Road in Selden.

The three elected officials put this event together to help all in the community who have lost their jobs either due to the COVID pandemic or due to government mandates or who are simply looking to find a better opportunity to improve their life.

“Our economy will only recover if those in our communities are able to get the jobs they need.  I am proud to join with Assemblyman Smith and Legislator Caracappa to help our residents, who have suffered throughout the COVID crisis, get back to work.  These men and women lost their employment through no fault of their own and it is imperative that we do all we can to help them get back on their feet so they can put food on their tables and pay their bills,” stated Senator Mattera.

“The COVID-19 pandemic and the NYS mandates have altered the lives of many this year. The key to helping those who have suffered from these changes, is to offer solutions and get them back to work. As Legislator of the 4th district, I am proud to partner with Senator Mario Mattera and Assemblyman Doug Smith on this job fair to connect the businesses in our community with prospective employees,” said Legislator Caracappa.

“Our community has been through so much; first, the COVID-19 pandemic and now the NYS mandates – which have left so many without jobs right before the holidays. This event is completely free to both employers and prospective employees.  At the event, prospective employees can meet with multiple potential employers in a convenient manner so job seekers are encouraged to bring multiple copies of their resume.

Donors with O-negative blood type, or “universal donors,” are especially encouraged to donate, as their blood is essential in emergency situations. A single donation can save up to three lives.

The Ronkonkoma Chamber of Commerce celebrated the opening of Super Greek Gyro Bowls & More with a grand opening and ribbon cutting ceremony on Jan. 12. 

Located at 966 Portion Road in the former Peter’s Kitchen, the restaurant specializes in gyro bowls and other Greek classics while providing their own twist to Greek street food with Greek Nachos and Poutine, homemade Spinach and Cheese Pies, and Greek sodas.

The event was attended by New York State Senators Alexis Weik and Mario Mattera, Brookhaven Town Councilman Kevin LaValle, Suffolk County Legislator Nick Caracappa’s Chief of Staff Robert Martinez, Ronkonkoma Chamber of Commerce President Kevin Hyms and Farmingville Hills Chamber President Michael Wentz, friends and family who wished owners Ralphy and Kostas Mokkas and Mikey Hernandez well on their new venture.

As we continue to deal with the COVID-19 crisis, the need for blood donations has hit a crisis level due to the lack of donors.  To help assist the New York Blood Center (NYBC) increase their blood supply, Senator Mario R. Mattera (2nd Senate District) is sponsoring a blood drive on Sunday, February 14, at the Smith Haven Mall in Lake Grove.  This donation drive will take place from noon to 6 p.m. in the mall’s Center Court.

With nearly 2,000 donations needed every day in New York and New Jersey alone, the current shortage has the potential to have a real effect on those who need blood transfusions.  Every single donation can save up to three lives.

Those most in need of blood include cancer patients, accident, burn, or trauma victims, newborn babies as well as mothers delivering babies, transplant recipients, surgery patients, chronically transfused patients suffering from sickle cell disease or thalassemia, and many more.

Potential donors are required to meet certain criteria including:
• Bring NYBC Blood Donor Card or ID with signature or photo.
• Minimum weight 110 lbs. or more.
• Eligible ages are 16 to 75.  Anyone donating who is 16 years old must have parental permission and anyone who is age 76 and over is required to supply a doctor’s note.
• No tattoos for past 3 months

All donors will receive a New York Blood Center t-shirt and a coupon for Auntie Annie’s pretzels.  Additionally, the NYBC will be doing free COVID anti-body testing for anyone who participates in the blood drive with results being provided via mail.

The entire donation process takes less than an hour and appointments are recommended to ensure minimal waiting time.  To schedule an appointment or for more information, residents should visit Senator Mattera’s website at mattera.nysenate.gov and click on the link on the home page or call the NYBC at 800-933-2566.

“The ongoing crisis is causing a very real and extremely serious shortage of blood supply and it is my hope that all residents who are eligible to donate will join us on Valentine’s Day to show some heart for their fellow Long Islanders.  Each donation has potential to save three lives and all donors will be a Valentine’s Day hero to everyone in our community in need of life saving assistance,” stated Senator Mattera.
