Stony Brook men’s soccer fell, 2-0, to Monmouth University on a rain-soaked Friday afternoon, Oct. 20, at LaValle Stadium. The loss moved the Seawolves into a tie for first place in the CAA with the Hawks entering the final week of the regular season.

Stony Brook kept Monmouth off the scoreboard in the first half before giving up two second-half goals. The Hawks enjoyed the majority of scoring chances in the first 45 minutes, finishing the first half with a 10-4 edge in shots and forcing Edmond Kaiser to turn away four potential scoring chances. The Hawks also saw a shot in the final minute of the half ring off the crossbar.

Monmouth broke through early on in the second half, converting on a set piece. Olle Brorsson headed home the first goal of the match after two of his teammates connected to head passes his way at the near post.

After Kaiser made a spectacular save on a would-be goal by Zakowski, it was again Brorsson who got the best of Kaiser. This time it was on a corner fed in by Erik Reis that found Brorsson’s head and eventually the back of the net to double the Hawks’ lead in the 55th minute.

The Seawolves totaled 12 shots in the loss, with three of them on goal. Despite ending the second half with an 8-5 edge in shots, Stony Brook was ultimately outshot 15-12 and 7-3 in shots on goal. 

“I thought it was a competitive game; these games at the end of the season, there’s a lot on the line. Ultimately, it came down to set pieces,” head coach Ryan Anatol noted postgame. “I don’t think we did a good enough job of defending them. We’ve got to do a little bit better to get the result.”

The team closed out its non-conference slate with its home finale on October 24 against the Lafayette Leopords. It was also the Seawolves’ senior night where graduating seniors Olsen Aluc, Iker Alvarado, Bas Beckhoven, Wilber Gomez, Trevor Harrison, Selcuk Kahveci, Sean Towey, Johan Velez and Carlos Zabarburu were honored. Results of the game were not available as of press time.

The Stony Brook University men’s soccer team took down the Charleston Cougars, 1-0, on the road on Oct. 7. Jonas Bickus tallied the lone goal of the contest, his team-leading sixth of the season, and Edmond Kaiser registered a second consecutive shutout, stopping all four shots he faced.

It was a quiet start to a physical contest in South Carolina, though Stony Brook had multiple opportunities offensively early on. Three consecutive corner kicks in the opening 10 minutes did not lead to a shot by the Seawolves, but later tries from Caleb Danquah and Bickus missed the mark. It was a chance in transition that would lead to the game’s lone goal.

Following a red card issued to a Charleston player, who took down a Stony Brook attacker just outside the box as he got behind the defense, the Seawolves opened the scoring. Lorenzo Selini rolled a short pass to Bickus, who blasted a right-footed shot off the fingertips of the keeper and into the right side of the net to put the Seawolves on top 1-0. The Cougars would take the ensuing kickoff down a man and at a disadvantage in the scoring column as well.

The score held heading into the second half and it would hold for the remainder of the match. Stony Brook continued to move forward in the second half, even as time dwindled. Offensively, the Seawolves had multiple scoring chances to put the game away, but could not convert. Defensively, Stony Brook held strong and did not allow Charleston to possess much or create many chances in the offensive third. 

The team returned home to host Le Moyne on Oct. 11. The score was not available as of press time.

The Stony Brook men’s soccer team got a pair of goals from Jonas Bickus in a 3-1 win against University of North Carolina Wilmington on Sept. 30 at LaValle Stadium.

Stony Brook broke the scoreless tie when Bickus netted his fifth goal of the season after Alex Fleury sent a ball into the box from nearly 20 yards, which Bickus finished with a fancy touch.

The Seawolves scored again on a goal from Caleb Danquah just one minute later, his first goal of his Stony Brook career. Again, it was assisted by Fleury after Lorenzo Selini sent him over a pass that Danquah redirected into the back of the net for the 2-0 advantage.

The squad would build its lead to 3-0 on Bickus’ 27th-minute goal, his second brace of the 2023 season. This time it was assisted by Olsen Aluc; after a missed shot, Bickus was in the right place at the right time to head it home and give Stony Brook the three-goal advantage.

The Seahawks tallied a goal in the 37th minute on a corner kick to cut the deficit to 3-1, which held heading into the intermission. However, Edmond Kasier kept the Seahawks at ease in the second half, making five saves to secure the 3-1 victory.

Stony Brook men’s soccer rallied from down a goal to defeat Delaware 3-2 on Sept. 16 at LaValle Stadium. Trevor Harrison netted the game-winning goal in the 83rd minute, heading home a cross from Moses Bakabulindi on a corner.

The Seawolves kicked things off less than five minutes into the contest when Jonas Bickus notched his third goal of the season, heading home a beauty of a cross from Olsen Aluc. Delaware evened the game three minutes later after Lorenzo Selini was called for a foul in the box, leading to a penalty-kick goal that Sam Donnellan buried.

Stony Brook was whistled for a handball in the box in the 37th minute, leading to a second Blue Hens’ goal from the penalty spot. This time it was Delaware’s leading scorer Carlos Fernandez, who beat Kaiser to the lower-left corner for the go-ahead tally.

After a scoreless finish to the rest of the first half, Stony Brook found the equalizer in the 47th minute. Bickus found the back of the net, his second of the match and his third goal of the season, scoring from the ground after playing the ball to himself on the pass from Bakabulindi.

 Stony Brook would break the tie in the 83rd minute when Harrison headed home a Bakabulindi feed off a set-piece from the near corner. Harrison’s first goal of the season held as the game-winner, helping Stony Brook remain unbeaten in CAA play and grab sole possession of first place in the league’s table.

“Obviously a great win and good to get three points at home. Overall I thought we played pretty well,” head coach Ryan Anatol noted postgame. “We did a good job of winning the ball and looking to play forward. I still think we’ve got to defend a little better in and around the box, but overall it was a good performance.”

The team  returns to action a week from today, traveling to face Northeastern on Sept. 26 in Boston.

The Stony Brook men’s soccer team cruised to a 4-0 shutout victory over Elon to open conference play on Sept. 2 at LaValle Stadium. Edmond Kaiser earned his first clean sheet of the season and Olsen Aluc, Moses Bakabulindi, Alex Fleury and Amit Magoz all supplied goals in the win.

Magoz opened the scoring in the 16th minute with his second goal in as many games. Jonas Bickus and Caleb Danquah were credited with assists on Magoz’s goal that broke the ice. Magoz nearly had another in the 39th minute, but would settle for an assist after Aluc put home a rebound after the initial shot by Magoz was saved.

 Early in the second half, Bakabulindi padded the Seawolves’ lead, blasting a shot off of the left post after a perfect cross from Jon Jelercic. Fleury provided the icing on the cake, netting the first goal of his collegiate career in the 88th minute.

“It’s great to start conference play off with three points,” head coach Ryan Anatol commented postgame. “I thought the guys did very well on both sides of the ball. I thought we defended really well, happy to get the clean sheet, and we were dangerous in the attack to score four good goals.”

Stony Brook men’s soccer dropped a mid-week contest to Iona, 3-2, at LaValle Stadium on Aug. 28. Amit Magoz and Olsen Aluc tallied goals for the Seawolves in the defeat.

Iona grabbed an early 1-0 lead when Camil Azzam Ruiz netted his first goal of the night in the 33rd minute. The Seawolves evened the match thanks to Amit Magoz; Moses Bakabulindi and Bas Beckhoven assisted on Magoz’s first tally of the 2023 season.

Minutes later, Azzam Ruiz broke the tie. The Gaels took a 3-1 lead after Azzam Ruiz scored his third goal of the evening in the 67th minute. Stony Brook stormed back, cutting the deficit to one goal after Olsen Aluc found a rebound in front of the net and buried it. The initial shot from Trevor Harrison was saved but caromed out to Aluc who found twine.

The Seawolves would play down a man for the final 18-plus minutes of action after Harrison was issued his second yellow of the night. Stony Brook’s best chance at an equalizer came on a Bakabulindi shot in space that sailed high above the crossbar in the 74th minute.

“The second half I thought was much better; the guys fought until the end, which is a positive,” head coach Ryan Anatol noted. “We still created chances although we went down a man. But we’ve got to put two halves together. We’ve got to put 90 minutes together if we want to get a result.”

Next up, the team kicks off conference play on Sept. 2, hosting Elon at LaValle Stadium for a 2  p.m. start. The second-ever meeting between the Seawolves and Elon will stream live on FloFC.

The Stony Brook men’s soccer team came out on top on Oct. 8 with a 2-0 victory at home over CAA opponent College of Charleston. The Seawolves first scoring opportunity came in the 30th minute when freshman defender Jon Jelercic blasted a shot into the top left corner of the net. This was the first career goal for the freshman. 

The second goal was scored in the 71st minute by sophomore forward Jonas Bickus as he sped past the defenders and tapped the ball home. Jelercic and Bickus had the assist on each other’s goals. 

Senior goalkeeper Edmond Kaiser recorded a clean-sheet, tallying four saves. 

“We got a win and three points so we are obviously very pleased with that, but more importantly the way we played. We’ve been harping all season long that we have to defend well, compete, battle, and play together. Very happy about the clean sheet as well. We put ourselves in a position to win, very happy, very good performance,” said head coach Ryan Anatol.

“We changed our style of playing and the zone around the half line pressed the other team. I think the most important thing for us is the energy, which was totally different today. We are fighting more than ever. It feels special to have a goal and an assist today and I hope that I can keep it going,” said Jon Jelercic

“We won this game because we brought the energy to practice this week. Everyday we worked so hard and I think that we showed that on the field. We have to be focused and keep the same mentality moving forward,” added Jonas Bickus.
