SCORING A TOUCHDOWN

Congratulations to Kate (pictured on right with her sister) who was the raffle prize winner at Emma Clark Library’s Super Bowl “Saturday” event on Feb. 11! She won a 3D football night light and an inflatable football target. Over 90 people (elementary-aged kids and their families) participated in the annual event and enjoyed football-themed games and festivities including cornhole, “Pin-the-Football in the End Zone,” a “Touchdown Toss” beanbag game, and a “Plinko” disc drop. Of course, there were plenty of books about football and an afternoon spent at the library is always a touchdown!

As part of “The Great Give Back” through Suffolk County libraries, Emma Clark Library, 120 Main St., Setauket will hold a Pet Food Drive through the month of October. They will be accepting new pet supplies (food, blankets, leashes, etc) in the Library lobby. All are welcome to donate (residents or non-residents) during Library hours. Library teen volunteers will then drop off the donated items at various locations. Questions? Call 631-941-4080.

The Teen department of Emma S. Clark Memorial Library, 120 Main St., Setauket is hosting a drive for local charities, collecting new pajamas for children now through Nov. 14. The public (residents or non-residents) may drop off donations in the “Kids Pajamas Drive” box located in the lobby, during library hours. Pajamas must be new (with tags) and for children. Sizes 2T – 4T are most needed, but all sizes are welcome.

 In addition, teen volunteers are making birthday gifts for homeless children as part of the community service program at the library. The class will be held on Wednesday, November 17 from 4:00 – 5:00 p.m. Teen volunteers will pick pajamas (from the Pajama Drive) and an Elephant & Piggie book by Mo Willems. They will then create a no-sew pillow, no-sew Elephant & Piggie finger puppets, and a birthday card for the complete gift set. Participants must register ahead of time at emmaclark.org/programs and must be Three Village residents in grades 7 – 12.

“It never ceases to amaze me how generous our community can be, and I’m so excited we are offering these two new ways to help children in need,” says Emily Ostrander, Emma Clark Library’s Teen Services Librarian. “Pajamas are such a basic necessity, and it’s so sad that there is such a huge need for them in local shelters and through local charities. Between the Drive, and our Birthday Gifts for Homeless Children program, I’m glad we can do our part to fill the need and can’t wait to work with the teens on such an important project!”

To commemorate the 20th anniversary of that unthinkable and tragic day, Emma  Clark  Library, 120 Main St., Setauket will host an educational poster exhibition, September 11, 2001: The Day That Changed the World presented by the National September 11 Memorial and Museum, in the Vincent R. O’Leary Community Room for the month of September.

“This educational exhibition recounts the events of September 11, 2001, through the personal stories of those who witnessed and survived the attacks. Told across 14 posters, this exhibition includes archival photographs and images of artifacts from the Museum’s permanent collection.” – 9/11 Memorial and Museum website.

In addition to the poster exhibition, the September 11 Museum also has online resources about the World Trade Center and the Twin Towers, the 9/11 attacks and their aftermath, and the rebuilding of the World Trade Center site at www.911memorial.org/learn/resources/911-primer.

The poster exhibition has been made possible in part by the National Endowment for the Humanities: Democracy demands wisdom. 

 The Emma S. Clark Memorial Library, located at 120 Main Street in Setauket and online at emmaclark.org, provides public library service to all residents of the Three Village Central School District.

‘Boy Juggler’ by Paul Edelson

Through the month of June, the Emma S. Clark Memorial Library, 120 Main St., Setauket presents an art exhibit titled Mostly Still Life by Paul Jay Edelson.

This exhibit includes paintings from late 2019 through the present. There is a range of subject matter, including landscapes and seascapes, all in an abstract style with strong imagery and intense color.

Recognized at the 2014 Gallery North Outdoor Art Show for his “Outstanding Paintings in Oil,” the top prize in that category, Edelson also won awards presented by the North Shore Art Guild (2016, 2020), the Southold Historical Society (2017, 2018) and the Mills Pond Gallery (2020). In Fall 2017 he was awarded “Best in Show” by the Long Island Museum (LIM) for his painting “Yellowstone Bison.”

A LIBRARY OF SWEETS

The children’s department of Emma S. Clark Memorial Library in Setauket was transformed into a Life-Sized Candy Land on Oct. 11. The event, now in its 7th year, attracted over 220 members of the community.   Children ages 3 to 7 donned their Halloween outfits, picked cards and followed a colorful trail, visiting places like the Peppermint Forest and Gumdrop Mountain where they were greeted by teen volunteers bearing treats.

Emma S. Clark Memorial Library in Setauket hosted a Star Wars Carnival on July 13. The afternoon featured Star Wars-themed games and included a visit from Darth Vader and a Stormtrooper who played with the children, checked out books and posed for photos and selfies. Over 140 members of the community attended the galactic event.
