St. Johnland Nursing Center Kings Park

St. Johnland recently held a celebration to commemorate the newly completed Assisted Living Facility on their Kings Park campus. The Assisted Living facility is the newest addition to St. Johnland which was founded in 1866 and since then has been providing care and support for the community.

Located in a serene woodland setting, the 100-bed facility will provide homes for individuals that are Medicaid eligible. They will also accept residents who are depleting their resources to become Medicaid eligible. The focus is to provide a residential and social setting where all residents can receive the care they need in order to maintain their optimal level of function and freedom while knowing they are supported by the residential services, medical supervision and personal care assistance they need.

The facility, which came about to meet the pressing need for expanded Medicaid Assisted Living Program capacity, will welcome residents who are ambulatory but may need assistance with daily care and medical services. The newly-formed St. Johnland Licensed Health Home Care Service agency will help secure treatment and services for residents. Residents who need more care as time passes will have the option of transferring to the Nursing Center, allowing the opportunity to age in place and have continuity of care.

A hobby turns into a passion

St. Johnland resident Chris Hasbrouck has put his free time into gardening with bountiful results. Sunflowers, eggplant, tomatoes, green beans, cucumbers and strawberries fill the raised garden beds outside of Lawrence Hall where Chris resides.

A former stockbroker, Hasbrouck, who is 55, suffered a stroke that left him in need of round-the-clock care. “My father had a vegetable garden, so when I was looking for a hobby, it just seemed like a natural choice,” he said.

Originally from Centerport, Hasbrouck started his gardening obsession 4 years ago and today has a crop of vegetables he shares with nurses and therapists at St. Johnland.

Honoring those who served

St. Johnland Nursing Center of Kings Park hosted a special Veterans Day ceremony for residents, staff and guests to honor those who served our country on Nov. 11. A patriotic performance of war-time tunes and a speech from a representative from the VFW led up to the presentation of certificates to 23 residents and one staff member to commemorate their service.

About 110 family and friends gathered at St. Johnland Nursing Center in Kings Park on Aug. 1 to celebrate its Medical Model Adult Day Health Service Annual Breakfast.

Participants who attend the Monday through Saturday program were joined by family and friends for a wonderful morning of food, fun and music. Guests had an opportunity to see the program firsthand and get a glimpse of how their loved one spends a typical day interacting with others and engaging in games and other mindful activities.

These faithful individuals transport residents to different educational and entertainment programs within the nursing center, bring in therapy dogs, work in the gift shop, host monthly teas and assist with special events and various office functions.

Carolyn O’Brien, director of recreation therapy, also offered her praise and said, “our volunteers’ exceptional attention to the 250 residents here at St. Johnland provides an invaluable service. We are very grateful for everything they do!”
