After trailing, 0-1, coming out of the halftime break Smithtown West senior Hannah Maracina’s shot on goal made it a new game in the girl’s class AA Long Island Championship soccer round against Massapequa at Shoreham Wading River High School Nov 6.

Massapequa’s Lia Howard scored the go-ahead goal at the 20-minute mark of the second half for the 2-1 advantage that would hold up for the victory. Meghan Peet had four saves in net.

Smithtown West concludes their 2021 campaign with an overall record of 12-2-1.

After a scoreless first half, it was Huntington senior Theadora Carnesi’s foot that did the talking in the second half when the midfielder stretched the net three times to win the game, 3-1, on the road against William Floyd.

Carnesi’s hat trick came courtesy of Gianna Forte who notched two assists in the Division I matchup Oct 5. Senior goalkeeper MaKaylah Frazier had six saves.

The win lifts the Blue Devils to 5-5 in their division as Floyd falls to 5-4.

Huntington retakes the field Oct. 7 where the Blue Devils host Smithtown West at 4 p.m.

Ward Melville’s girls soccer team finished last season atop the League II leader with a 9-0-1 record in an abbreviated COVID-shortened season to advance to the Suffolk Class AA final. The Patriots, No. 1 seed, faced Sachem East, the No. 3 seed,w and played to a 1-1 tie to share the Class AA title as co-champions.

Ward Melville opened their 2021 campaign at home where they hosted East Islip to kick off a full season the first time since 2019. After 80 minutes of regulation and two overtime periods, the results were the same, ending in a scoreless 0-0 tie in a non-league game Aug. 30. 

The Patriots are back in action Sept. 1 in another non-league matchup on the road against St. Anthony’s with a 7 p.m start before league play begins Sept. 4 on the road against Walt Whitman. Game time is 10 a.m.

Ward Melville co-captain Rachel Ehrlich broke the ice for the Patriots in the second quarter as did teammate Abigail Foster with goals in the Suffolk Class AA semifinal round against visiting Northport April 21.

Northport sophomore Marryn Gruhn’s shot on goal found its mark but the Patriots prevailed to advance to the county championship round.

Northport senior Bridget Bost had nine saves on the day as Ward Melville’s Elyse Munoz, a sophomore, stopped eight.

Ward Melville the top seed will face undefeated Sachem East the No. 3 seed at North Babylon high school April 24. Game time is 3 p.m.

Fresh off their win in the opening round of the Class AA playoffs, Centereach (8 seed) hit a road block in the quarterfinal against top seeded Ward Melville where the Patriots struck early and often blanking the Cougars 5-0 at home April 16. 

Junior midfielder Kate Ancona’s strike found the net seven minutes in followed by senior Katie Cosenza who found gold a minute later to take a 2-0 lead. Nicole Fabris was the go-to senior for Centereach but was doubled teamed all game and struggled to find a look for the Cougars.  

With 24 minutes left in the half, Peyton Costello’s foot spoke to put her team up by three. 

Abigal Foster answered the call 16 minutes into the second half when her shot found its mark for the Patriots to take command of the game, and teammate Ryley Meckley joined the scoring frenzy to ink the 5-0 win and with it, advance to the semifinal round. 

Centereach senior Gianna Oliveri had six saves in net and Elyse Munoz the sophomore stopped five for the Patriots. 

The Patriots retake the field April 21 in the semifinal round where they’ll host Northport (No. 4) at 4pm. 

After a scoreless first half, Centereach senior Nicole Fabris broke the ice for the Cougars at the 24-minute mark to take the lead against Smithtown East in the opening round of the Suffolk Class AA playoffs April 14.

Smithtown East struggled to keep the ball upfield desperate to tie the game with 15 minutes left on the clock but Fabris found herself in front of an open net and tapped in the insurance goal for a 2-0 lead. 

Ava Ruiz had an assist in Fabris’ first goal, and Kelly Malheiro assisted on the second. Centereach senior Gianna Oliveri had eight saves in the win. 

Smithtown East concludes their COVID-abbreviated season at 6-4-1 

The Cougars advance to the next round where they’re face the No. 1 seed Ward Melville on the road Friday,

April 16.

The Ward Melville Patriots kept their winning ways when they rolled over Walt Whitman in a home game with a 7-0 shutout March 27.  

Senior co-captain Katie Cosenza and sophomore Emma Ward set the pace for the Patriots with two goals each with teammates Summer Agostino, Sally Gliganic and Peyton Costello finding the back of the net. Sophomore Elyse Munoz had five saves on the day. 

Ward Melville has allowed only four goals this season through six games putting them atop the League II leaderboard. 

The win extends the Patriots unbeaten season to 6-0 with four games remaining before post season play begins.

The Cougars of Centereach left no doubt who was in charge when they traveled to their crosstown rival Newfield, scoring five minutes in off a penalty kick by Centereach senior Nicole Fabris to take the early lead. Newfield struggled to keep the ball up field and found themselves defending their half of the field when Fabris struck again with a big push up the left side where her solo shot found the right corner for the insurance goal 12 minutes into the second half. Fabris wasn’t done when she buried another penalty kick with 13 minutes left in the game for which Newfield had no answer.

The win, their third in a row lifts the Cougars to 2-2-1 in league IV for third in the standings behind Smithtown West and West Islip. The loss drops the Wolverines to 0-4-1

Both teams are back in action March 25 where the Cougars host Bellport at 4:30 p.m. and Newfield has a home game against North Babylon searching for their first win of this early season. Game time is 4 o’clock.

The Wildcats of Shoreham-Wading River struck first when Matteo Sweet found the net six minutes into the 2nd half to take a 1-0 lead over visiting Hauppauge in the Suffolk Class A soccer quarterfinal. The anticipation grew as the Wildcats held that lead with less than two minutes left in regulation, but the Eagles evened the game at the 1:17 mark off the foot of Aidan Augeri  forcingthe sudden death overtime period. The Wildcat’s season ended eight minutes in, when Hauppauge’s Tim Hug scored the game winner for the 2-1 victory.

Shoreham-Wading River concluded their season with an impressive 13-4 record, with senior Brady Cummings concluding his varsity soccer career ranked 4th in Suffolk County with 25 goals and five assists. Teammate James Rose made Suffolk’s top 25 scoring leaders, with 13 goals and six assists.

Goals are hard to come by in soccer, and one was all it took for Shoreham-Wading River when 9thgrader Graceann Leonard crossed to junior Ashley Borriello who buried her shot minutes into the second half. John Glenn was unable to answer and the Wildcats won 1-0 Oct. 24 as they conclude their regular season at 11-1-2, one game behind Div. II leader Hills West.

The win bodes well for the Wildcats as they’ll play the opening round of the playoffs at home Oct. 29. Game time is set for 4 p.m.
