FALL FOLIAGE HOT SPOT

TAKING FLIGHT

Gerard Romano of Port Jefferson Station was in the right place at the right time when he snapped this photo on Oct. 5. He writes, ‘I was at the end of the bulkhead at Satterly Park in Mount Sinai. To my left a great egret was taking off. Its wings made quite a commotion. I zoomed my lens out to 300 mm and was able to capture it as it flew by.’

Port Jefferson Station resident Gerard Romano spied this group of roses blooming by the Port Jefferson Village Center on June 15, a perfect accompaniment to the poem below.
Reopening

By Ellen Mason, Stony Brook

Civilization awakens.

The weather is warm.

We’re eager to mingle.

We’ve weathered the storm.

We’ve made such adjustments,

In the wish to resume.

Now it’s time for a haircut

And examining room.

We’re forever grateful

To workers out there,

Who stayed at their posts,

Through this horrible scare.

We welcome the changes

But with caution, at last

To face life in the future,

With somber thoughts of the

                                     past.

EMBRACING THE SEASON

Gerard Romano of Port Jefferson Station snapped this beautiful photo on Aug. 3. He writes, ‘The last few weeks I have seen many butterflies, and today there was a large monarch pollinating the blossoms at Harborfront Park in Port Jefferson. I set the camera’s shutter to 6 frames a second and attempted to capture the monarch in full flight and managed to get this close.’

HAPPY RETURNS

Gerard Romano of Port Jefferson Station took this beautiful photo at the traffic circle near the Port Jefferson Country Club on June 21. He writes, ‘The daylilies have begun to bloom this year. In this photo I increased the level of contrast and shadow in the edit process to separate the flower from the background.’

PRETTY BIRD

Gerard Romano of Port Jefferson Station was walking along Van Brunt Manor road in Poquott on April 22 when this great egret popped its head out of the reeds. He writes, ‘I am not a wildlife photographer, but I gave this bird a go with my new Nikon 70-300mm lens. He was very elusive, but I managed to capture a photo of his pretty face.’
